Recall, recall recalll.....

took eight months wasnt it for the current mars probe to get there??

i heard, they predicted that to get from one side of our galaxy to the other, it would take 1000 human years, travelling at 20,000 miles an hour. Of course, we would never be able to do that.. (thats what i heard)

This site suggests the galaxy we live in is 100 to 120 thousand light years across: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way
That means it would take 100 to 120 thousand human years to cross it at just under 300,000 kiliometres per second.

The bit about the size of the galaxy made me think about the nearest star to ours - Proxima centauri.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxima_Centauri

It is 4.24 light years distant - 4.24 years at just under 300,000 km per second
i.e. if I have done the calculation correctly (using the 300,000 kps approximation for the speed of light) 13,371,264,040,113,792 million kilometres.

Multiply that by 120,000 and divide by 4.24 to get the largest estimate of the diameter of our galaxy in kilometres...

Psyber.. it's Friday morning.. really with all the numbers? REEEALLY?? This is how you want me to kick start my weekend, by deciphering your elaborate maths equation?

C'mon, there's nothing like a little basic arithmetic to get you, and the weekend, going! ;)
Now I've done that I can face getting myself some breakfast.

After breakfast I have to sort out the choices in landlord insurance, sort out financing for an investment property with my bank manager, and set up my new i7 laptop.
There's nothing like being retired...

(Although I'm about the take a temporary job in WA for about 3 months.)

I'm with you on that one G. Everything to them is "over east" whatever relevance that has to the universe.

Miles away from humanity, minimally inhabited, arid deserts, extraterrestrials etc.

South of Perth rather than north. :)
My employers are providing a free 3 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment near the beach in Bunbury CBD for the duration.
(And free car I can use to travel down to Margaret River occasionally...)

whatever the distance, it still makes me think there has to be something else (life) out there. Will we ever get that far out to even see of there is, again i doubt it.

Also heard that we are apparently in a part of this galaxy that scientists call a "dead end", and they say if we were looking for life in this part of the galaxy we would have probably thought or skipped this small area of the area they were looking in..

and on the 21st of december 2012 (next month) is we or our sun is suppose to pass through the centre of our galaxy or alignment with the centre for the first time ever, hence the reason that this thing about the world ending in december 2012 has come about over many years ago. Again, rumours  . Few sites have said we have aligned before and nothing will happen, but some say it wasnt a true alignment until 21st dec 2012
