took eight months wasnt it for the current mars probe to get there??
i heard, they predicted that to get from one side of our galaxy to the other, it would take 1000 human years, travelling at 20,000 miles an hour. Of course, we would never be able to do that.. (thats what i heard)

This site suggests the galaxy we live in is 100 to 120 thousand light years across: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way
That means it would take 100 to 120 thousand human years to cross it at just under 300,000 kiliometres per second.

It is 4.24 light years distant - 4.24 years at just under 300,000 km per second
i.e. if I have done the calculation correctly (using the 300,000 kps approximation for the speed of light) 13,371,264,040,113,792 million kilometres.
Multiply that by 120,000 and divide by 4.24 to get the largest estimate of the diameter of our galaxy in kilometres...

I hear it's a bit similar to Mars over there

I'm with you on that one G. Everything to them is "over east" whatever relevance that has to the universe.

My employers are providing a free 3 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment near the beach in Bunbury CBD for the duration.
(And free car I can use to travel down to Margaret River occasionally...)
