Am I missing something? I fail to see the big deal.

I only saw the piece on the news. It was a major achievement I reckon, to fall from such a high altitude and break the sound barrier before executing a perfect stand up landing. Awesome!

Took some balls. Big set of steel ones.
I think it's rare to see world firsts anymore so it's easy to get caught up in her hype surrounding them (for many).

Except for falling faster than the speed of sound it isn't exactly a unique event. Back in 1960, Joe Kittinger jumped from around 31 km up and held the altitude record until today. He's still alive and participated as mission controller for today's event.

yeah, definitely a big set of balls in play on that occasion. No computer modelling, gps assist and hi tech space suit technology. Basically seat of the pants stuff.

I'll add a great quote from Joe Kittinger (now 84) following the success of today's jump
"I'd like to give a special one-finger salute to all the folks who said he was gonna fall apart when he went supersonic."

Pretty significant, I thought.
And someone did a similar jump 52 years ago? Most people missed it!

39km up and freefalling for more than 4 minutes!
I thought it was really fascinating stuff, massive balls to do something like that.
Good luck to the guy.

I had a really bad feeling about this jump, couldn't see it ending well for the guy, but happy he got down safely

He did it as the final jump in a series of tests of new safety/parachute quipment designed for pilots that had to eject at hight altitude.
