I reckon the Bali bombing is one of those moments in life where you will never forget where you were when you heard the news of the tragedy.

For many people, the assassination of JFK; man walking on the moon; Gough Whitlam's booting; John Lennon's death; Elvis Presley's death; Diana's passing; and 911 loom large in our thoughts.

But where were you when you heard of the Bali bombings?

I recall that I was returning from a footy trip with Loxton. We'd stopped at the Swan Reach Hotel about 1pm and were there with Ironbank, who were returning from Mildura, when I first heard.

I remember where i was for the twin towers, unfortunately would not have a clue where i was for this.

Must admit, I can't recall where I was or what I was doing when I heard the news either .. That shouldn't detract from the enormity of the tragedy and how profoundly distressing I found it (and still do), more just a case of an aging memory.

I remember thinking that all of these terrorist attacks are always gut wrenching, but to see it involve people like the Sturt lads and Jason McArtney etc that you follow on a weekly basis over a number of years made it even more upsetting.

No idea where I was whatsoever.

I know where I was when 911 hit (home but only heard about it after I got to work) and where I heard about Diana's death (Flagstaff Hill Oval to see a Noarlunga final) though.

I think the fact that the South East Asia Tsunami occurred a couple of years after the bombing kind of pushed the bombing a fair way back in the line of significance, well to me anyway. Mind you I do see Julian Burton quite often at my work and that reminds me of it. Jason McCartney's comeback game for Nth Melbourne was special too (and I read his book).

That's a fair point about the tsunami.

Maybe I only remember it because I was on a footy trip.

Having seen Sturt win the flag the week before it was a Sunday morning and living in a country town I attended a joint working bee for the 2 local cricket clubs doing maintenance on our nets that we share.

With 2 local boys on Sturt's squad all of us took a keen interest in the events. 1 was on that trip the other being a 18/19 kid in his first season was thankfully still in Adelaide as he couldn't afford to go.

The 1 that did go still has issues as a result of the blast mainly to do with hearing I think. Don't know if there are any lingering mental effects, I assume there could be.

Apparently it was late at night.
The fact we didn't hear about it until 1pm on Sunday tells two stories as well, I reckon.

1) How much of a bubble you live in on a footy trip.

and 2) How much technology has changed. We had mobile phones but they didn't have the capabilities of now. If we'd had the phones of today, we would've read it on facebook within minutes of it happening. And you would have been able to read it on the news services on your phone.

I don't recall where I was either, or for most of the other tragedies.
When the 9/11 attack was announced, I was home in bed in the morning and had just turned the morning news on.
I remember more detail about the televised moon landing.

The first thing I can remember about hearing about it was discussing it in the lunch sheds on a construction site before work one morning, there was a lot of anger and animosity, especially as it was seen as a direct attack at Aussies by many.

I'd be interested to hear your recollections of the moon landing, Psyb.

There was not a lot to remember that has not been described many times - it was brief and grainy.
It was quite convincing and I don't believe the conspiracy theorists claim that it was faked.

My outstanding memory was having to raid the hospital store room for a broken down TV set and repair it myself so the medical staff could watch it as the doctors lunch room had no TV.
The other guys covered my patients while I took the back off to turn up the cathode gain to get a picture at all, and rigged an indoor antenna with wire paper trays bound together with sticky tape.

what was your fondest memory of the ice age Psyber?

That's rude, Johnno. Although I did think about asking about Psyb's recollections from when he heard that Hitler had crossed his troops into the Sudetenland.
