Julian Assange

Did anyone watch the movie on Ch10 last night? I did and I was blown away by this young bloke and his exploits. I am now a 100% supporter of wikileaks and what it stands for. Assange himself was portrayed as fine young man of extreme intelligence whose only motivation was to expose American foreign policy and the mass cover-up's they peddle to the naive media. Assange cared for his mother and little brother, he cared for his teenage girlfriend and their baby and he was completely passive. He and his mates never hacked into bank accounts and stole money. They stole nothing despite the fact they easily could have. They made the Victorian police look like complete fools, they hacked into a sleeping Telstra system and exposed serious flaws in the US defence force security. It was a very entertaining movie. 10/10 from me.

Yep, I enjoyed it too.

Funny how Assange can be made a public enemy by the U.S but they let Mark Zuckerberg get away with making a mockery of the privacy of 1 billion people around the world.

Ive been reading the book that covers what happened in the movie, as well as other young hackers from America and Europe. Even though Im not very computer savvy technically speaking, its really easy to follow.

It goes into a lot more detail about the WANK worm they used to shut down NASA. It actually nearly brought NASA to their knees.

Assange also found bank account details for princes in Saudi Arabia, and never once took money from them. A hacker in America found out about them, but Julian wouldnt tell him how to find them. Eventually he found them himself after lots of looking and printed the details off and gave some out to people in exchange for other hacking info.

Its free to download at http://www.underground-book.net/

I think our government (and the opposition for that matter) are as weak as p1ss for not backing Assange up and coming to his rescue. It would be pressure from the US that is causing our inaction I'm sure.

I remember a political opinion poll (Newspoll or Nielsen) about a year ago they asked the question if you support Assange's activities.

Some clown on another political forum was trying to tell me no one gives a stuff about Assange (he's an ALP party hack) and then had a fair bit of egg on his face when the poll question suggested majority support for Assange & WikiLeaks.

I think after seeing this movie, people will warm to his cause in big numbers. My partner was in Europe and UK recently and she said she was asked all the time about Assange. She got the opinion most people over there were on his side and not the Yanks.

Well that too is a serious beat up. Both women have since said that if they knew the trouble it was going to bring they would never have reported it. In fact, both tried to withdraw the charges but Swedish law doesn't allow this. According to the court records, Assange slept with this chick and they had consensual sex with a condom. Then during the night he woke up and dived in for another session - as you do - but forgot the condom. When the two women compared notes and discovered he was famous, they were advised to place charges because they might get a quid out of it. This is hardly sexual assault! But it remains the facts of th ematter

Not wanting to cause trouble doesn't mean it didn't happen. Of course a movie about him is going to be pure spin. Propaganda at its worst

I was disappointed that they didn't show anything after he was arrested as a young fella.
There seems to be room for a sequel or two...

Yeah I want to know what happened to Electra and the baby. And everything else between then and now.

It said at the end that there was a bitter custody battle and he spent the next 10 years living the life of a single father. So I assume he got custody.

Some of his work could be seen to be important, for the cause of transparency. Eg lighting up civilians in Iraq from a helicopter gunship.

To simply dump millions of documents on the internet for people to read, is over the top.

The Australian Govt apparently made dozens of attempts to assist Assange but he was seemingly unwilling to take it.

Now he has chosen to seek political assylum in Ecuador - a country infamous for its lack of free speech.

I think he was foolish to think he could do what he did and just expect a nation state such as the US to say, "oh well, nevermind". Its ironic that on the one hand he expects the US to face up to the consequences, yet he isn't prepared to face up to any consequences of his own.

Its easy to be cynical about Australia being the so called "Deputy Sheriff" of he US. But in reality, Australia has its main strategic alliance with 4 countries - US, Canada, UK and NZ. It may surprise some of you to know that Australia does get a lot of benefit from the "Five Eyes" Alliance. The Assange affair shouldn't imply that Australia is trying to "save" that relationship at whatever cost, becase DFAT did try to assist him. But remember that Assange also embarrassed Australia with his leaks.
