Awful news, sorry to hear.
Happened'to me when I was 17, was awful, great dog and friend he was, I still miss him. That was 10 years ago.

Faaaarking awful news mate. You have my sympathies. My current dog is staffy/Collie cross and is ten this Xmas. I'm dreading the day she carks it. my previous one was a border collie and he died in my arms after having a heart attack when he was 11.
It must have been excritiating to take your pet of 16 years to a vet knowing you will be carrying it out deceased. Bloody awful.

We haven't got a dog, but our cat was hit by a car a few months ago and was taken to the vet by someone who found her. Mr McSpaz was at work and I had to bring the boys with me to the vet, where we were told that Kitty would be unlikely to survive surgery or have significant quality of life. The second hardest thing was explaining this to Angus, who was devastated; the hardest thing was to watch his behaviour. He was trying so hard to be brave and not cry, because he didn't want to distress Kitty (not that she would have been distressed - she was as high as a kite on methadone and went mental with happiness when she saw us). After we'd stayed with her for a time and said our goodbyes, Angus said that he would like to go out of the room when the vet gave her the injection, so the receptionist took the kids out and I held Kitty while she was put to sleep. On our way home Angus said quietly that he was very sad, because he had chosen her from the animal shelter when she was a kitten, and she was his friend, and could he please stay home from school tomorrow? (I let him.) But yeah, it was very hard to say goodbye to Kitty - she was such a spazzy little girl. She was three years old but still seemed to think she was a kitten, and we could never predict what she was going to do. The trouble was that she was so friendly and always liked to visit other people's houses, and she thought nothing of crossing the main road. That was where she was run down. We couldn't stop her - we couldn't keep her locked up. We were getting calls frequently from shop owners and from St Francis Winery to come and collect her (Kitty liked to crash wedding parties - lots of people always attracted her).

So sorry to hear moe... Fisho, very sad too. Had my wedding at st francis in nov 2010. Wish the kitty said hi.
I can't imagine taking my dog to the vet to say good bye, she's 3 and is the 1st pet myself and my wife have got. she is a legend...

But my family dog we got when i was 10, and had to get put down when i was 28. probably a bit late but it was too hard to pull the pin. old age just caught up with him and had no idea what he was doing... Probably one of the most disobediant (can't spell) dogs i've ever known , but he was a dead set legend with a huge personality for such a little dog. very loyal.

Sympathies to you too Blink. I think it is great that so many of us (people) love and nurture our pets and probably animals in general. I hate people who have no regard for animals and treat them like sh1t

Me and Mrs G had to take our greyhound to get 'the jab' a few years ago. We took him to the vet with a bit of a limp- figured it was prickle in the paw or something. Xray later showed an osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in his hind leg. We were given the option of euthanising or keeping him for a few weeks/months until it became unbearable.

We took him home with some painkillers. He showed no change for 4 months or so, still running around like a mad boy, climbing stairs etc. then one day just refused to get up out of the sandpit. Within 12 hours he'd gone from walking/eating etc to virtually nothing. We knew it was time but it was pretty late in the night. He was breathing slowly and had a consigned look on his face. We rugged him up for the night not expecting him to make it through the night. Eventually got to bed. Woke up early the next morning and he was still going . Rang the vet and got an appointment jammed in between xisting bookings.

Had to lift him on a sleeping bag through the house and into the boot of the fairmont. Folded the rear seats down and had Mrs G laying in there with him. (Not real safe but wasnt thinking about our well being at that stage). Vet came out and helped us lift him into the room. He asked if we wanted to be with him- I expected Mrs G not to want to be there but she surprised me. We were with him through out. A weird feeling, was obviously upset as he slid away but also relieved in a strange way- I swear he gave us a 'thank you' look as he left....At that stage it was the hardest thing I had to do in my life.

Loves you without question. Loyal like no other. Licks your face even when everyone else thinks you stink.
All they ask in return is a scratch on the belly, a bite of your yiros & chuck of the frisbee every other day.

I have been in the old doghouse too many times to remember, it's gonna be lonely in there now.

This whole thread brings back many memories and tears having to go through it 3 times with my own dogs and many times when I was young with the family kennel.

I have ensured that my kids have grown up with as many animals as possible to experience all the emotions involved.
