Postby Stumps » Mon Sep 10, 2012 11:52 am

Anyone know anything about Tyres? Need new tyres for my SUV. Only use for city driving. Size 225 65 R17. Have had maxxis recommended ($255) aswell as goodyear efficient grip ($305), bridgestones $255 and just then from tyrepower a brand called newton ($169). Want something safe and happy to pay top dollar but only if it is necessary. Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated. Stumps

I only ever buy Michelin or Pirelli. When it comes to roadholding and longevity they are unmatched. Then one day when you really have to stand on the brakes they will grip like baby poo to a blanket. Tyres are one commodity on a car that you should not compromise on IMO.

Tires are one case where you get what you pay for.

For the little SUV you have, I'd look into Cooper Tyres ( An American company  ) as they ( I believe ) offer some warranty / guaruntee on km's the tires will be good for.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Speaking of tyres.

Bridgestone.

SUV's and 4 wheel drives dont have a good history of longevity of tyres.

Stick with manufacturer's selection. :D

Possibly there is a sticker on the drivers door when its open? :D

Coopers are gaurenteed 80k kilometeres.

Can't beat that... :D

It's only Money $$$ :)

I'd go with the Bridgestones without hesitation. There'll be no worries about quality and performance with them and that seems like a good price for a tyre that size.

I tend to favour Michelin for high performance cars but it depends on the price I can get - gain for cost value is critical...

For my Audi sports I went for Michelin PPP2 over the Bridgestone equivalent last time when I could get them during a promotion that brought the price gap down to about $40 a tyre. At the normal $100 plus gap for Michelin I'd have probably stuck with the Bridgies, or looked at Falken. ( As Kevin Kenny who sold both said once, "Michelin are a better tyre but not 60% better.")

I've never been a big Pirelli fan, but I've been favourable impressed with their Scorpion ATRs on AWD vehicles.
I had some Kelly tyres on a Suzuki Ute once, and they were surprisingly good.

However, whatever you decide on, ring around for pricing and don't forget to check Melbourne prices.
I bought Scorpions in Adelaide in 2009 for my old Musso.
One Bob Jane outlet quoted $275 each, another one $250 each, and BJ Ferntree Gully (Mebourne) $215 each.
I went back to the second BJ here and said I'd be getting my 4 tyres next time I went to Melbourne at that price differential.
They dropped their price to to $225 each instantly.
