An appropriate gift: wine

I want to thank a colleague for going out of their way and helping me out. It's not a personal friendship... I don't know them extremely well - rather, I'm just a very grateful colleague.

A bottle of wine would be appropriate, but I don't know much at all about wine, and I don't want to ask around the workplace to get ideas - I want it to be a surprise for the person.

So, I'm looking for suggestions about:-

1) suggestion of cost? I don't want to spend too little and appear stingy, but also not too much and appear way over-the-top.

2) maker/name of wine suggestions? Again, something nice, but not ridiculously gorgeous.

Thanks guys. Looks like $20 to $30 seems reasonable without being excessive. No, I have no idea whether red or white would be more their style - would it be too huge a generalisation to say women prefer white and men prefer red?

Another vote for the Wirra Wirra - lovely drop. I'm also partial to Wynn's cab shiraz merlot. Also, I'm not a massive fan, but the Banrock Station wines are pretty popular amongst my academic colleagues because the winery is environmentally friendly or something. Eco-winery?

Coolabah fruity lexia was my undoing in high school and I'm sure it's at least partly responsible for how I turned out as an adult.

Anything labelled Penfolds is seriously appropriate and has a touch of class. Rawson's Retreat is entry level but there is a wide se lection at $25 to $55. The Penfolds label will be remembered long after the others mentioned on here even though I agree they are nice quality
