Injuries you have suffered!

Postby whufc » Thu Jul 26, 2012 6:59 pm

A thread in the SANFL section got me thinking about the injuries i have suffered over my sporting career. There have been many but one thing i noticed is they almost all happened in comical fashion.

Injuries i have had
-Broken Nose- playing marks up in primary school, momentairly thought i was Jonathon Brown and run back into the pack of about 20 kids only top cop the knee off some year 7 kid straight in the snoz. Splattered all over my face.

-Split head open 35 stitches to forehead. As a 8 yo spat the dummy on xmas day because the old man wouldnt put up the brand new bball ring i got from santa. Ran into my bedroom jumped onto my bed and smashed my forehead on the bedhead. Blood every where ran into the loungeroom where the parents were, they broke out into a argument over who was going to take me to hospital as both had been drinking all day. While they did that i called grand day who lived around the corner he picked me up and took me without the parents knowing. Xmas day in hospital.

-Senior cricket as a 15yo was hit by Wasley left arm opener something Davison. Went to play the pull shot bottom edge in the nads. The box split in half and fell out both legs of my pants. Started pissing blood in hospital for 2 days. Doctors got rid of the pain but unfortunatly also took away the swelling.

-Playing soccer, made a run to recieve the ball of a team mate. Team mate didnt pass went to do a u turn and snap, tore both the tendon and ligament in my left ankle. Nearly started a brawl as my teammates thought the opponent must have belted me or something as the ball was 50m away with no one else around.

-Dislocated shoulder of my own bowling in cricket saving a single to mid on in a game we won easily. Have re dislocated 3 times since and off to have reconstruction. Last time i popped it out was at my own work place going for a swim before i started my shift. Went to get out the pool and popped it out again in the deep end. Had to lay on the lane rope to stop myself from drowing until the ambos got there and put it back in.

-multiple broken fingers as well from a combo of cricket, boxing and football.

I've done relatively well.
Broken right collar bone age 5 falling off a slippery dip while trying to slide down it on my feet like a surfer.
Rip in my right calf about 100mm long while climbing a stack of scrap metal age 10.
Major bruising of right ankle while playing hockey age 14.
Broken nose at 16 when someone opened a door suddenly and the door knob hit me in the nads and I landed on my face.
Currently dodgy right medial meniscus - probably related to Fencing - always lunging on to the right leg with the knee bent.
About three episodes of concussion spaced well apart.

I did get hit by a car on the King William St and North Tce intersection once, while walking to University from the railway station.
I was thrown a few feet but only suffered minor abrasions.
I'd heard the screech of tyres, seen it coming, put my briefcase between it and me, and leapt away as the impact was about to happen.
(50 years later the imprint of the FC Holden head lamp is still visible on my "lucky" briefcase.)

I've also done some damage to others:
Fractured another kids skull age 5 - he threw half a brick at me but I was more accurate when I threw it back.
Dislocated another kids elbow age 10 - he was trying to stab me in the abdomen with a pointed stick at the time.

Anti-inflamatoties are dangerous my friend. Be Carefull. Heart attack material.

Methotrexate

Fabulous drug. Got me up and running again but I had a heart attack at 49.

Taken anti - inflamatories since around 25..

Never taken another anti - inflamatory since, with the advice of the emergency staff at the Lyall Mac. 6 years ago :D

How do you get through the pain.

Get rid of everything that gives you stress.

Had knee recons on both knees, plus 5 miniscus tears in the left knee and 2 in the right.
One recon was from someone falling across my knee playing soccer, the 2nd was 11 years later attempting to rebound in BBall.

Destroyed my left shoulder playing in an Intra-church footy game last year, and wrecked the AC joint in my right shoulder playing soccer...

Had a massive concussion playing soccer as well... was running onto a bouncing through ball and got absolutely poleaxed by the goalie from the other team. We were playing against the RAAF at the time and apparantly they just switched on their RAAF medical training and looked after me on the pitch.

Have torn the rib cartlidge about 5 times from picking up/wrestling/playing with my two young boys...

Kids ar a killer...

Broke my big toe on left foot playing backyard cricket wearing thongs. I was batting and managed to smash my toe with the bat! Needless to say I'd drunk a massive amount of booze leading up to that, which was the main contributor to that happening.
Other injuries:
Jumped off bunk bed, and hit head on moving roof fan, 15 stitches in head. (5years old)
Tripped over a tree root and hit head on brick, 10 stitches in head (6 years old)
Footy injuries include broken ankle, broken ribs, dislocated fingers (too many to count), dislocated knee, concussion, fractured eye socket.

You blokes are all a mess!!

Broken arm on play ground as a 10 year old. Right forearm.

Had a young family and decided to give footy away over cricket, helping that was a groin injury. A bursa, small pcoket of fluid right near where muscle joins bone high, and I mean high in my groin popped and left the tendon in my groin rubbing on bone. My last two years of footy left me with an ice pack on or near my bollocks most Saturday night - into Sunday mornings. The ultra-sound on that one is a story in itself... :D Right up behind my right....

"Retired" from footy in about 97-98 and went back to Lockleys around 02-03 for a fistful of games
Busted my nose coming out of a pack at the college old scholars up on Grand Junction Rd. Had an airy on the left kicking for goal when I went back out and knew my time was up, this time around.

Numerous dislocated fingers from footy and cricket. One middle finger playing mixed-6 pack indoor against the back net that a chick lofted back to me and I popped the finger inside out almost and knocked it up into the top corner of the net for a 12(?)...

My right pointer finger first knuckle is about 3 times the size of my left and aches like all hell when its cold.

Knocked out at Salisbury North (?) maybe...ran into the goal post. Out cold. Only concussion I've had.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

As a kid we were walking along the side of the lake at West Lakes when my brother (in pram) decided to throw one of my toys in the lake, I started going down the steps to dive in to get it when I slipped on one of those green greasy algae steps and cracked the back of my head open.

Another time in primary school I was playing on some sort of swing thing jumped out hanging onto the rope but when I came back cracked the back of my head open again on one of the very thick supports. I remember the back of my t-shirt being almost totally covered in blood.

I don't remember this but again as a kid my brother and I were pretending we were WWF wrestlers and I jumped off the top of the couch to done of those flying elbow things and broke my arm. The worst bit was supposedly my father who was sitting on the couch watching a game of footy didn't want to deal with it so I had to find my mother who was having a bath and she quickly got out and took me to the hospital. Yes, my old man is a prick but at least with my right arm in a cast I learnt to handball left handed so much so I never went back to handballing right handed full time again.
