First, let me admit I am not very experienced in this area, as my wife took care of the domestic stuff, without my involvement, until her health failed.
She was the domestic type, and asthmatic, and wanted to do it her way to minimise risk.
Since her illness, and her subsequent death, I've had to start learning.

With my health orientation, I'd worry about any chemical system and what I may finish up inhaling as fine residuals rising out of the carpets later.
I'd certainly want to know all about what is used before being prepared to consider it.
For that reason I'd favour using a steam or water system with a little detergent, even if it is less convenient.

I do have a small machine of that type I use promptly for any spills or stains.
But as the carpets that came in this house wear out, I'm going with timber flooring and loose rugs.

Go to woolworths and hire a carpet shampoo cleaner thingy (prob not technical term), really easy to use, relatively cheap and does a good job.

DONT BE SLACK!!

If you want to DIY it, Bissell make a quality range of cleaners, can pick one up that does a good job for the sub $300 mark, one off payment a heck of a lot better value than paying the guy to do the job every now and again.
