Does anyone know about the school tax relief that families may be getting this month?

Isn't it $400 odd per primary school kid and double that for secondary?

No need to keep receipts for kids school expenses anymore.

I have no idea, I've heard it through the grapevine but have no idea on when it gets paid or who qualifies for it.

can claim for this year, with rebates of approx $400 for primary and $800 for secondary. It is a rebate, not a straight dollar for dollar deduction, so not sure how much you need to spend to get the full amount. The bonus received recently was just some more Julia "cash-splash" and the rebate can still be claim thei financial year, but this will be the last. Next year it will be an automatic payment for those that qualify for Family Tax Payment A. Having a quck look through the Master Tax Guide it looks like to get the full $400 for a primary you have to spend $800, so basically double. If for example you spend $640, the you could claim $320.

After perusing the ATO & Centrlink web pages I've found that anyone that qualifies for FTP "A" will receive $400ish per primary school aged child and $850 IIRC per secondary school aged child, this will go into bank accounts between last week and next Thursday.
It's an offset as most don't bother claiming for school stuff.

If they are buying computer accessories it's all good, chucking it in a machine makes me ill, would rather see vouchers that have to be spent in supermarkets for clothes or food.

the school tax cash shouldve been spread out amongst the schools and then then schools could use that to help subsidise school uniforms etc

Unfortunately a lot of this cash will end up in poker machines. This was never about education but is a vote buying ploy :o

With what we get from the government. half of it into the twins bank accounts. The rest will be used for what they need for school for. the rest of the year.

I suspect most of the cash will be blown rather than go towards the kids education.
Then the primary purpose is not to help their education but to buy the goodwill of the unthinking for the next election.

After all it is the federal ALP's only hope, and shows their contempt for the intelligence of the average voter..
Expect more handouts of this cynical type just before the election!

Agree. Maybe something like providing it on a per-class basis to help fund excursions and the like.

Sounds a bit like the Baby Bonus that Costello brought in.

Sounds a bit like the Baby Bonus that Costello brought in.
That was born of his belief that a growing population was needed to fund pensions for our growing number of pensioners in an ageing population.
He was wrong - the world is finite and the human population can't keep growing.
What we need is a realistic superannuation scheme funded by employee contributions as well as just employer ones.
(And set up so governments can't "borrow" and spend them like the SA government has again.)

But at least you had to have the baby on the way first - it wasn't handed out like this one where it isn't even tied to the kids actually getting to school.
