Recent changes - shops

Over the last 5 or 10 years there have been quite a number of changes in the types of shops around. A lot of mobile phone shops, sushi bars, cafes and coffee shops all over the place. On the other hand, book shops and music shops have almost completely disappeared and corner delis seem endangered. I guess there are positives and negatives to all changes. What patterns have you noticed with changing shops recently?

It's a pity in a lot or regards. Krypton discs at Glenelg has closed, only months after receiving an aria award for best independent retailer. The lure of online bargains and big box discounters like jb hifi. I'm gonna miss krypton, bought my first cassingle there.

Pretty much gone.....

Music shops, Book shops, Electronic shops (ie Dick Smiths, Tandys etc..), some clothing stores.

With clothes its different now....you used to have the "top" end of fashion with high prices and the "low" end like Target, Kmart etc.... now we have brands like Mambo, Traversty in Target & Kmart when you used to pay top money for those brands in surf shops etc...top end brands have had to come down or they would go bust!!

One thing most that is missing (as I went shopping today @ marion) - CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Its rude and pretty much gone these days :(

I could be way off the mark but could this have alot to do with the fact an extremly high percentage of jobs are casual/part time. Most places i go into and what i see at my own work is the casuals have no pride and are generally either uni students/ in between jobs etc etc and feel as if they are scumming it to be working their.

Obviously doesnt apply to everyone but i find it tends to be the case with alot especially the 18-21yo uni students.

On Saturday I visited a far away distant suburb called Salisbury and stocked up on some cheap dvd's (Bad Taste, Footrot Flats & a Patty Hearst movie for $5 each!) at some sort of music store in the shopping centre there and the customer service from the Paramore chick with fluro pink hair behind the counter was pretty ordinary, cute as all get up though ;)

lol I've only seen it once and it was a long time ago so can't remember much of it but my brother loves it and is always dropping quotes whenever I catch up with him so thought $5 can't go too far wrong.

I'm a big fan of Brain Dead though and Meet The Feebles is a riot too.

Fishing stores are the worst for this. Considering their prices are sometimes 50% higher than what you can buy online you would think their customer service would be top notch. A couple of well known Adelaide stores are absolutely woeful...I prefer buying off the net, if they go broke I couldn't care less.
