Woolworths to sell Dick Smith Electronics

A GIANT of the consumer electronic industry for so long, Woolworths has today foreshadowed the death of iconic retailer Dick Smith - closing up to 100 stores and making redundant more than 200 staff.

In their sales announcement today, Woolworths says its first half sales rose five per cent to $29.7 billion despite the supermarket giant facing subdued consumer confidence and falling prices.

But after analysing their consumer electronic division, Woolworths today said it would “accelerate the restructure of its speciality consumer electronics brand with a view to divesting the business.”

I don't go to my local Smithy's very often but they do give me some good advice.

Sometimes the young ones get it wrong at Harveys. I still check em out though, but I go the tech xpert counter.

Sometimes the young ones get it wrong at the checkout at smithy's so be aware and check your bill and change.

Sad times for retail.

Open a store where people can check out your items find what they like (they can only look, not buy)

you direct them to your Chinese based website to buy the items

The minute the Dick Smith name is gone , the better , as far as I am concerned. Here is a bloke who owned some electronic parts/gadget stores that made him a wealthy man, but sold virtually nothing Australian made. Then he sells them to Woolworths and later promotes a Buy Australian Group.
He doesn't own any part of Dick Smith Electronics & has no say in what happens to it. He sold out, including his name.

Gerry Harvey is another one. Sells appliances from overseas, makes him millions, then whines about punters buying from overseas online.

Rant over.
