Finding Jobs

Postby hearts on fire » Thu Nov 24, 2011 10:21 pm

Currently had enough of my current job, need a new one, an apprenticeship preferably.

What's the best way you have gone about finding one?

I have tried looking through paper and online so far, can't really think of much else to do.

get your resume updated properly.

subscribe to seek.com.au.

Despite the jobs you SEE ON SEEK, send your resume to every recruitment agent known to man anyway. Then next day, ring them.

A couple of things to remember:

Recruitment agencies do not advertise on seek UNLESS they can't find anyone by searching their database. To get on their database, send your resume to them.

70% of jobs don't get advertised, they are filled by 1. word of mouth, 2. known resources, 3. people on their database. If worst situation occurs, they advertise.

If you were interered in an apprenticeship in horticulture, ie greenkeeper, gardener, arborist etc, get in contact with Maxima Group Training.

Statewide Group Training employ apprentices and lease them out to businesses, kind of like a temp agency - but different - and not the same:

Maybe do a basic tafe course in the field you are interested in first. Eg electrical, horticulture, welding(wouldnt recommend)
This way you can see if you like the trade and any potential employer will know you have some basic skills already so you will be quite useful when you start
I'm number 1, so why try harder!!

having been through the situation of being made redundant 4 months ago, i went out did as GADJ has suggested, updated resume, cold calling companies in the industry and also recruitment agencies, search seek and careerone etc.

but as the saying goes, its easier to get a job when you have a job.

You could also try AIGTS (Australian industry group training services) a training company who employs apprentices in all different trades and like statewide lease them out to a business, throughout their 4 years. AIGTS do look after their apprentices very well, I highly recommend them.

You could also try PEER who employ electical and pluming apprentices if you would be interested in those two trades.

Didn't you once ask for a plumbing apprenticeship?

What are you doing now?

What would you like to do?

I hate my job too. But I'm good at it.

I don't think anyone likes their job...? ;)

Knocking on doors and leaving your resume is the best way to get your job. :D

Or have a friend to introduce you.... ;)

Currently doin air cons with the biggest piece of sh1t company going around.

WAS doing a tafe pre-voc course in plumbing, but quit that to take up the job (where i am now) i only took up the job, as they said they would give me an apprenticeship, IF i did other bullsh1t for six months or so. Other bullsh1t just includes putting the evaporative coolers in and refrigerated and duct work. Coming up to a year and a half later, still no apprenticeship, so looking for another job.

I don't know what it's like over that way HOF, but there's companies in Lincoln dedicated to traineeships and apprenticeships.

Surely there's some agency over there that puts people into work for it...

Google it, go in and see them with:

"Hi, I'm HOF, I'm looking to do an apprenticeship in plumbing/carpentry/sparky (whatever takes your fancy)...
This is what I've done so far (Don't tell them you think your current employer is a piece of shit (hey no swear filter))....
Can you help me?"
