The person at my workplace who was on a phone call, saying loudly "Yeah, apparently its the minutes silence for Rememberance Day, ah well" and tried to keep talking, got put in his place very quickly with the number of people glaring at him.

The throb of cars continued throughout the silence and, of course, during the actual service. I could hardly here the words.
But then again, I guess there wasn't much silence at Flanders, Ypres or Gallipoli.

Some towns and cities here try to get around that by turning all the traffic lights to red for the silence. Not sure how successful it is though.
