FFS, cry me a river ...

I've got a 14 year old and there's no way she would have got herself in the same mess as this moron.

The parents of the 14-year-old boy caught with drugs in Bali have sold his story for six-figures to 60 Minutes.

The exclusive contract with the boy, who is facing a possible six-year jail term for possessing marijuana, is understood to be between $200,000 and $300,000

Nine Entertainment bought the family's story and will spread the cost between 60 Minutes, Nine News and ACP magazines, most probably Woman's Day.

Rival network Seven bid heavily via current affairs program, Sunday Night.

The deal was finalised on Thursday by Nine's managing director Jeffrey Browne and was signed off by CEO David Gyngell.

Celebrity agent Grant Vandenberg acted on behalf of the family.

The Morisset Park teen, a self-confessed drug user, pleaded guilty when he appeared in a Bali court on Friday. He will be sentenced later this week.

the problem is that media still think chequebook journalism is appropriate, when clearly its not. We've got a criminal system that says criminals aren't able to profit from their crimes, yet journalists are able to flaunt this by offering staggering sums for these stories.

As I've said with the paparazzi, it will only stop when we stop buying magazines, or stop watching rubbish programs like 60 minutes that think they can make money from this.

Not sure what to think about the family but utter gutter journalism from the others.

Will be interesting to see how this stacks up with the "benefits of crime legislation".

Is there not some legislation in place that prevents bogans from making money out of crime?

there is voyerism at play here. Parents of "normal" teens will tune in to watch this story because they want to see what happened. The money the parents will receive for this story about their upstart kid is a lot to them but less than a drop in the bucket to the media writing the cheque. I won't watch it but I bet the episode rates its tits off.

deadshit kid, dropkick parents ... what a perfect match.

There is some chance it may blow up in their face ... the Indonesian court may not take too kindly to the news

yeah I agree dedja. What may also help sink him was the teeny street tough gesture he made when they stuck him in the back of the car after the court hearing the other day. Snubbing his nose at authority etc.

Problem with the proceeds of crime legislation is that the offence he has been charged with would not be an offence that would activate the provisions within the act if it had occurred in Australia. In basic terms he would not have faced any serious drug offences in oz being caught with what is considered to be an amount of recreational use substance.

I understand the deal has fallen through after the Indonesian defence team suggested it might not go over well in Court.
The parents are reported as now saying they never wanted publicity, nor the TV deal.

looking at this from the other perspective, you have to give the parents some credit for staying out of the media so far (bit different to the corby fiasco)

also, i wouldn't blame them for selling their story, they would be getting hounded for it.
Also, they will have BIG costs to cover through lawyers etc. They just should have waited for the proper time. WHEN THE CASE HAD FINISHED IN COURT, that;s where they have F###kd it - IMO.
oh, and by leaving their untrustworthy potsmoking 14yr old wander the streets in a foreign place, that wasn't the smartest! :)

Would prefer a system that prevents them coming back to the country once they go to Bali.. oh wait, the Indonesians have done that for us.
