Cheap footies?

Postby zipzap » Sat Nov 05, 2011 11:00 am

Heading overseas on a teaching exchange next year and want to take some footies with me for Year 8 PE lessons. A colleague who did a similar exchange 10 years ago told me that clubs / leagues bent over backwards to supply him with gear to promote the game but I've so far had no luck with AFL, SANFL, Crows, Puffs, Sturt, Norwood... in fact out of that lot only Sturt have replied so far just to say they were out of promo balls. AFL Canada also replied and may actually be useful down the track.

So if it looks like I have to buy some footies (say, 12-15) I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a local supplier of cheap balls (cheap but not too nasty - I'm thinking the Rebel Sports of this world might be a bit too much)? Buffalo sports have a leather size 3 ball on sale at around $10 which looks the best I've seen so far.

Do clubs ever sell / get rid of old balls?

I know port and eagles do, usually to clubs in their zone, they are pretty average condition though. Most saafl clubs wouldn't. They usually walk or are used til they die.

Zippy .. Norwood are currently going through a bit of a transition in Admin, with the CEO and Marketing staff finishing up shortly, so I would hope that would at least explain the lack of response.

I'll try and get in touch with them for you this week.

Thanks mate, to be honest I contacted them only late last week so I'm hopeful they'll get back to me - my school is in their zone. Their players put on a clinic at our fete last week and are generally pretty supportive of the school and kids in the area

Hughes & Loveday supply a lot of the school sport equipment, made in china sort of stuff. I'd imagine footies would be reasonably priced through them.

Yep, you're right, thanks. Because they are wholesalers they'll need a school order though which will be a problem because it's not for my school...

Back in the day, a few mates of mine were having a quiet Saturday summer evening in when one of them had the idea to kick the footy about. A footy was searched for but none could be found. So they drove to Glenelg and climbed up on the roof of the primary school. Came down with half a dozen balls, been lodged up there since the footy season.

So be sure to check the roof of yer school

I reckon they'd be able to make an exception - I've arranged stuff privately with them before.

Hey congratulations man. 15 should be enough but maybe I can upgrade from synthetic to leather?
And get yourself something nice while you're at it :)

Thanks for that! Today I chatted with somebody in the SANFL, thanks to SJABC for the heads-up, and I'm hoping to have something worked out soon. I'll let you know what happens :)
