New or rconditioned head supplier

So I'm a really ugly bloke and was wondering if anyone knew if I could get a new head or just get it reconditioned somewhere...

Actually I've found out my 87 hilux has either a blown head gasket or a cracked head. I spoke to our mechanic at work and his advice was to just drop a new/reconditioned head into as it's done just shy of 350,000Kms and is probably knackered...

I got a price from headfixed.net of $404 recon. or $509 new with all gaskets and bolts supply only.

Does any of you forumites know anywhere or someone that supplies so I can find another price.

Would be good to know the cost to fit it too although I may have a couple mates that can help me with it...

Cheers.

At that price I wouldn't hesitate getting the new one.

I'm not sure how much to fit it, I've been out of the repair side of the industry for too long now.

Re-conditioned heads are pretty expensive.

Back in the old days I always got mine repaired.

Yellow Pages.

I think the most $$$ are for a pressure test.

Which is mandatory. :D

If you have an old vehicle, you must expect to spend some sort of cash to keep it on the road. ;)

I absolutely hate Early Magna Heads, they are so touchy. :D

Well after a bit of looking around I've found a full engine for $660 out of a Daihatsu Rocky (same engine apparently) from a local wreckers. They said it only has 100,000Kms which I doubt but I can't argue I guess. Definately heading in that direction or U-Pull-It sell heads for $99. Not sure if they have any in stock though cos it looks like they only have the next model up according to the website...

I did briefly entertain the thought of doing a conversion to something a bit bigger, a few forums have said a VN motor fits in them... But too much work!!!

Commodore V6 is a good conversion but if you're trying to do it cheaply forget it. Engine, conversion kit, full roadworthy + what ever else they find wrong at the time.

24 years old and dangerous for you and your family to be in it.... ;)

By todays standards....

Who wants' to drive a 10 year old vehicle.... :D

Oh no, definately not a family car! This is my runaround pig... Gets me to work and allows me to take my 60Kg Akita out when I want to...
