The missus and I have a two-year-old border collie.

The other night, we ran out of dog food and with no nearby shops open, I suggested we feed the left-over chicken bones from tea to the dog.

She vehemently denied we do so, citing chicken bones (cooked or raw) can splinter and puncture internal organs etc.

I grew up on a farm with many dogs, we always fed them left over bones whenever we had them, whether lamb chops, leg roast, what ever.

I've never seen or heard of a dog eat a chicken bone and suffer a puncture inside.

I figure they're meant to feed on left-overs and carrion and the like, so why would chicken bones, cooked or raw, be any different??

So, I put it to the good folk of SA Footy, do you feed the dog chicken bones? Or have you heard of animals meeting an unfortunate demise at the hands of a shattered chicken bone shard?

I just gave the dog the bones (drumstick bones) and she nailed them quick smart and is quite happy many weeks later.

I've heard that raw they are fine, but avoid cooked ones.

yeah we have always fed our dogs chicken bones and never had an issue. It's probably like everything though, there's always an element of risk. If we all worried about that though, we'd have a pretty boring life.

what about feeding dogs chocolate?

bones are fine but must be raw.

chocolate can be harmful along with onions (if ya give ya dog any leftovers from your meal that may contain onions)

We were always brought up never to give dogs chicken bones for that exact reason - they splinter.
However our friends have 3 x border collies and they give them raw chicken wings all the time.

I'm yet to encounter anyone that has killed a dog by giving them chicken bones though.
I understand the science behind chocolate and onions given they are both toxic to dogs, but bones? I mean, seriously?
They eat mice, other small birds?

Our red heeler broke into the house one day, dragged the garbage bin out the back side of the house out of view and got into some cooked chicken bones. As a result it had a bone splinter pierce and get stuck in its throat. So it does happen and would be much more serious if in the gut.

Was fairly fresh bones I guess.
Didn't need surgery, I think the vet just reached down its gob and yanked it out.

I was under the impression it was the rib bones because they can get stuck across the throat, I had the same problem as stretch, our staffy was making some bizarre noises and I had to fish out a chicken rib that had got wedged across the back of her throat.
