New Foodland on Port Road

Postby Sojourner » Mon Sep 19, 2011 9:34 pm

Roger Drake has opened a new Foodland Store on Port Road where Bunnings used to be, it opened today and there are opening specials galore, I calculated that I got a trolley load for around half the usual price, well worth driving across to check it out if you want to save some coin this week!

The suburb is Allenby Gardens, I think it was Llyods before it was Bunnings? Its just before East Avenue.

That was next to where Mobil is now. Dan Murphy's is on the old Putt Putt from memory.

So it's on the port side, not the city side of the road?

Wonder if it'll turn into an overpriced, filth bucket with an extremely limited selection like most of Drakes Foodland's.

Agreed. Coles @ Welland just up the road, Arndale around the corner along David Tce. Interesting spot to pick.

I notice that Foodworks at Windsor Gardens has closed down too.

I wonder if they'll stick a Foodland there too.

There is a pattern emerging.
The Foodworks in Aldgate has recently become a Romeo's and a new one has opened in Stirling too.
They are in between Woolworths in Stirling and Coles at Bridgewater - all only a few minutes apart by car.

Not sure about that one, Foodland already do pretty well in the North Eastern Suburbs and have a fairly popular store at Clovercrest as well as Romeos at the Modbury Triangle. I dont know that the site at Windsor Gardens is such a good one for a stand alone supermarket. Still CostCo keep saying they want to come to Adelaide, for a shop like them that people drive to across the suburbs it probably would be the way of going in terms of floorspace anyway!

I'm surprised we haven't seen an ALDI pop up yet.

Has anyone ever been to one? They have one in Horsham and it's like a big Cheap as Chips in terms of they don't sell brand name stuff, which is why it's probably cheaper.

Sounds a bit like Rite Price, except I'd guess ALDI sell food that is still within the expiry/best before dates.

Rite Price is always an interesting experience, finding products you thought they had stopped making 3 years ago - and finding out that they HAD stopped it 3 years ago.

ALDI is not an old stock discounter like Rite Price, they sell their own brand of stuff similar to Black and Gold Brand and normally its in larger sizes only and often straight off the pallet racked into pallett shelving. They also sell brand name stuff but again usually in the largest size available and often keep only the largest size of any one product.

Slightly off topic but I recently discovered a little stall in West Lakes Mall that sells all kinds of American junk food rubbish and they even sell cans of Dr Pepper for $2 each. If anyone is interested it's right out front of that newsagent down near K-Mart. Last week I got a can of regular Dr Pepper, 2 cans of Cherry Dr Pepper and a can of Cherry Coke, I think those other ones are all about $3 a can and weren't much chop.

I was beside myself when supermarkets here stopped selling bottles of Dr Pepper a few years ago but good to see Vanilla Coke starting to make a bit of a comeback ;)
