I was out of home by the time I turned 18 with a conquest that is now Mrs.Boon of some 13 years.
I would suggest that, so long as income is sufficient to support ones self, that around 18 would be the right time.
Although, many stay at home for much longer in the modern world.
To quote Alan from Hangover 2 "I'm a stay at home son"....

I moved in and out of home from 17yrs old to 19yrs old - before finally staying out..lol.
My son moved out at 19.
My daughter is 18 and I can't see her being capable 'in any capacity' of moving out anytime soon...lol

I was about 23 I reckon. I found it a good age. Had my career established and a concrete source of income locked in. My parents are fairly easy going, but it was about then that I got sick of living by someone elses rules.
No way I would've been able to support myself through uni, and I'd say it's the same for the first 2 or 3 years of apprenticeships/traineeships.
Depends a lot on individual circumstances.

I went to Uni straight from school, finished when I was 21. No way I would've been able to support myself with a rent/mortage.
Moved out five months ago (just before my 23rd birthday) after saving like hell with my partner for a decent house deposit.

Moved out of home when I was about 23 or 24.
Moved in with a mate in the city, living life as a single man, which was great fun, for about 12 months.
Then met my now wife and we moved in together (with her brother living with us as well, he's no in Darwin) and have now been living here in Norwood with the wife for 5 years this coming January.

Moved out at 17 when I went to Uni for a year. Always went home for weekends to play sport etc.
Moved back in after a year once id chucked Uni in then lived home for 2 more years.
Then moved out to live with the Mrs a couple of months before my 21st and lived with her since. I was happy living at home but her parents moved to the EP to expand their oyster business and she needed to find somewhere to live so thats when I moved out for good so that she didnt have to find somebody to live with.

I was 24 when I moved out last december. Fiancee and i originally planned about 2 years earlier but didnt have the financial stability we do now. Each to their own i guess but you generally have an idea when its time to move out.

Wishful thinking there, I reckon!
This might be a lot closer to reality:

Left at 17 but that was to go straight into the military so wasn't exactly fending for myself.
I'd say it would vary greatly from family to family...not all are as perfect as the Waltons. TBH I'd have found a way to leave as soon as I legally could.

I moved out age 23 when I married my first wife, and let her support me while I did my last year at University.
I'd suggested waiting but she argued she was earning more than my father anyway, as a teacher.
About 2 months after she and I parted (amicably enough) 8 years later, my mother said. "Would you like to come home to live?"
I said, "No, Mum, it would be good for me to learn to look after myself."
When she pushed the idea again I added, "No Mum, it would interfere with my sex life."
(It was the mid 1970s.
