Germany has marked the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall which dominated the city for over 28 years.

In 1961 communist East Germany decided to block off the streets, cut rail links and begin building a wall of barbed wire and cement to prevent the flow of people to the democratic West.
The sudden move shocked the world and lead to hundreds of deaths as refugees attempted to flee the poverty-stricken East behind the Soviet Iron Curtain.

Seems like a good thread to post this link:

"This is my husband. His name is the Berlin Wall and he was born on August 13, 1961. I expect you've heard of him; he is quite a celebrity. He lives in Berlin. "

I wonder if she baked him a cake?

Apparently their disagreements can be quite drawn out.

It's like arguing with a......wait a minute....

A Berliner bun, perhaps?

Although rock cakes may be more to his liking.

I was in Berlin for New Year's Eve, end of 1989, and spent some of the evening ON TOP of the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate with many other excited folk. I will never forget that atmosphere...

Was in Berlin in 1980 and visited East Berlin which was pretty bland I must say.

Visited again in about 1991 after the wall had fallen and it was quite different. Stayed with some "freaks" (German version of hippy/ferals) very close to the old wall site.

Souvenired a few chunks of the wall as well as some old Trabant parts which are all proudly on show at my place...
