Get yourself tested for Prostate Cancer

Postby Sojourner » Sun Aug 07, 2011 1:46 pm

Just learned today that a mate of mine has Prostate Cancer, he has just turned 50. It was discovered because he wanted to go on a trip on the Kokoda Trail and an anomaly came up in his blood tests, they are now doing scans to see if it has spread and what treatment can be done about it.

Every male should have a blood test every year to look for a high cell count as well as the standard test for Prostate cancer, yes it might be uncomfortable and embarrassing at first, its far better than not getting to see your grand kids growing up and dying well before your time.

If you haven't been tested, please at least give some through to having a word to your GP about it!

Very true - get it tested, and regularly!
And see a specialist for an opinion if there is anything at all.

My PSA level had been only mildly elevated for a few years, but jumped suddenly, though still not very high, and nothing else showed up in the blood.
So, my GP didn't think anything but a re-test in 6 months was indicated by the standard protocols but I wanted to see a Urologist anyway.
He did a biopsy because of the sudden change, rather than the level itself, despite the theory that it was unlikely to be cancer at such relatively a low level .
It was cancer, but fortunately it was found early, and appeared to be confined to the gland.

I didn't muck around but elected to go with a full Prostatectomy in May 2010.
My various follow up tests have been all clear for the last 14 months so I can relax and regard myself as cured now.

yep, just had all my bloods done, all clear. Who wants to be lying, dying somewhere, with all your friends & family standing around you, when all along you know that all you had to do was have a blood test. Told my mum several times in her last few years to get her blood tested. She didn't listen.

My Brother-in-law was recently diagnosed and thankfully thus far all signs are positive that they've nipped it in the bud.

He is a cigarette loathing fitness junkie that regularly trains for and compete's in triathlon's so we were all a bit shocked .. Cancer doesn't discriminate, so as per the other posts, get yourself checked lads.

I'm 36 later this year and have been checked. No history of it in the family. About 12 months ago I went to the doctor after my last few visits had been merely for certificates for work due to illness and recent publicity regarding mens health I took the *ahem* plunge and went for a full check up.

Blood pressure, Sugar, Cholesterol, Prostate. All good, well, most of it anyway.

If you have nothing valuable to contribute, don't post in here, it's a sensitive issue that affects many families.

Just for the record and to avoid any confusion ... I'm not trivialising this at all.

Why would I? ... I've lost a sister to leukaemia and my father fortunately survived cancer, so I think I have some idea about the effect that cancer can have on people's lives.

Soj started the thread to open up some awareness to something that us blokes tend to avoid, I like a joke as much as the next bloke but the thread soon got hi-jacked and turned into a joke.
It would be nice to have some serious threads on here where posters can share experiences and make others more aware of what's out there.

My Dad got diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last August and had a Full Prostatectomy in November. Had recovered well from the operation but still had a PSA reading when checked just before Christmas, meaning there was still Cancer lingering. The surgeon did discover some cancer that had spread and removed what he could see during the initial operation. PSA has stayed at 0.26 (last test result was today) but the doctor discussed options of Radiotherapy and Hormone Treatment. He is getting a PSA test every three months. Still trying to get my head around the different options/scenarios/treatments etc. and what it all means.

Hawthorn legend Don Scott fights aggressive form of prostate cancer

FOOTY legend Don Scott has revealed he is battling cancer but declared himself a "lucky man'' for catching it early.

The former Hawthorn ruckman and premiership captain has issued a plea for men to get regular check-ups after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

He said he was thankful that sticking to a routine annual appointment had helped spot the disease in its earliest stage.
