Obviously this wiped everything else off the news channels here last night.

Sadly the death toll is looking a lot higher this morning...80 at the youth camp now confirmed on the radio...but some would probably also be indirect as opposed to being shot ie those who died of hypothermia or drowned trying to escape from the island by swimming to the mainland...

Also looking more and more likely it was their own version of a Timothy McVeigh type rather than an outside group.

Death toll still climbing...saddest part will be when they release the ages of the victims...most likely to be under 25.

The guy has been charged with both attacks...

...and the BBC site has a profile of him...

Not here sadly.

Sky News had some extended coverage on it, whereas good ol' AdelaideNow thought articles on politicians arrested for shoplifting, cute dog attacking a hearing aid dog, the Crows loss and reader pics of near 0 overnight temps were more newsworthy than this, with the attack well down the main page

This is a tragedy and with the memories of Port Arthur, we understand what the Norwegian people are going through.

What a sad waste of young life.

The rise of Norway’s hard right

It is an unbelievable moment of horror for a country of less than 5 million people, with Norway left reeling not only from the death of 93 people but also the implications of a home-grown terrorist intent on killing innocent citizens to fight against the “multiculturalism” of Europe.

After setting off a car bomb that killed seven people in downtown Oslo on Saturday, a man dressed as a police officer arrived at the Utøya island summer camp and opened fire at the campers. For more than an hour the gunman stalked the island, shooting and killing 85 people. Many of those killed were in their teens or early twenties and were shot as they attempted to swim away from the island or run from the gunman. The death toll for the two events stands at 93, with an additional 96 left injured.

But why do such a thing? The accused gunman, Anders Behring Breivik (who claims to have worked alone), was a right-wing extremist and nationalist, infuriated by the liberal Norwegian government and its immigration policies.

A Tale of Heroism During the Norwegian Massacre

The man who had suddenly become a hero pours himself a beer and lights a cigarette. He only managed one or two hours of sleep the night before and he looks tired. It is the day after the massacre at the Norwegian youth camp on Utøya Island. The suspected perpetrator, Anders Behring B. cold-bloodedly shot down 85 people on the previous day -- but dozens were able to flee by jumping into the water and swimming towards the mainland.

It is 24 hours since Marcel Gleffe became a key figure in pulling many of these young camp goers out of the water. Thirty-two years old, Gleffe is a roofer from Germany who has worked in Norway for the past two-and-a-half years. Currently, he is vacationing at a campground in Utvika together with his parents Walter and Heidrun. The campground is directly across from the island where the massacre took place.

He takes a deep drag on his cigarette and begins to tell his story. It was a chilly late afternoon on Friday and the Gleffe family had just sat down for coffee at the table in front of their RV. They were talking about the attack that had just taken place in Oslo , about the bomb and the several people it had killed. A neighbor at the campground had told them of the shocking attack .

Suddenly, they heard a hollow bang. First just one or two, "but then it was an entire salvo," says Heidrun, 53. They saw dark smoke rise up from the island. "I said to my husband, 'come on, lets go down to the jetty, we have to see what happened." Maybe it was some fireworks, they thought, or some sort of exercise.

From http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/worl ... 6100231078 :

"Authorities have downgraded his death toll from 93 to 76."

So 17 people were dead, but got better? :?

Mis-count of people on the island, double count.
