Capital Punishment

Postby gadj1976 » Sun Apr 24, 2011 7:23 pm

I'm intrigued by people's ongoing feelings toward capital punishment. Something that hasn't been in Australia since the 60's from my understanding.

I have differing feelings toward it. For crimes against defenceless people, I believe capital punishment should be allowed. However the person must be absolutely 100% guilty. Any shadow of a doubt, and capital punishment should not be allowed.

Then there's the case of Keisha Abrahams who was allegedly murdered by her mother and step father. This for me, falls into the category of people who should suffer at the hands of the law.

This is an emotive issue, with people normally feeling stronger one way or the other, however I can see validity in bringing back into the Australian legal system.

What are your thoughts?

when there is no doubt then yes bring it in

i also believe that suspended sentences should only be used in extreme circumstances

the min sentencing needs to be raised as does max sentencing

Flying pigs.
Honest politicians.
Sensible Collingwood fans.
Capital punishment.
The ultimate oxymorons.
How do you punish dead people? :?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Instead of death penalty i would rather see a punishment where a person is punished for life in jail with absolutly "NO" chance of being realsed before they die. No paroles nothing, in jail until they cark it.

For the most serious of crimes, I don't have a problem with no release. Eg Anita Cobby murder. I'd also like to see offenders who are paroled, but offend again, not given an opportunity for an early release again. Likewise with bail and suspended sentences, once they stuff up once, thats their chance.

I did read in the paper earlier this week that the Rann Govt is looking at tightening up on parole later in the year, to me thats not good enough, it should have been done already. Its a no brainer.

I mention this because its more likely for these measures to be introduced than capital punishment, which will never be brought in despite the majority of the population arguably (and i say arguably because I don't have stats to back it up, just a feeling) being in support of the death penalty.

Bring back some form of hard labour. Don't just rot in jail.

Exactly.
Unfortunately we have too many weak parole boards and self serving politician in Australia to adequately pass and enforce the right legislation.

well if they are alive then they still have opportunity for parole and some get it even if they dont deserve it. If they are dead that is no longer a chance

Waste of time & money keeping them alive , cost of a bullet is cheaper and less drain on the system.

The only problem with "a bullet" or a noose, is that there's always an extensive appeals process involved with capital punishment, and the costs involved are always significant, as we've seen in America over the years.

Would it cost more than keeping them alive for 30+ years?

The inhibiting factor there is cost.
On the other hand there have been a number of cases reported in the US where people have been executed and there has been no doubt, but the later evidence not originally available - like DNA - has raised doubt.
I have mixed feelings about the death penalty at all, and I'd certainly want to restrict it to proven repeat offenders.
