Quitting facebook

Postby OnSong » Thu Mar 31, 2011 4:22 pm

There are some here that don't have facebook, but many more that do.
Has anyone actually disabled their account and abandoned the social network ship?
If so, what was it like on the outside?
Right in front of me. RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!

I canned mine about a year ago after having it for about one year. Life on the outside is so much brighter. Colours seem more vivid, beer tastes better and it's amazing talking to mates face to face.

You can either disable (keeps all your info but "nobody" can see it unless they google your name) or permanently delete your account. Permanent deletion is the way to go if you ask me.

I find it a handy tool in my line of work but hell, I just wonder what it would be like without it.
Now I'm not single, it's one less reason to have it really.

Having worked in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and moving jobs often (and therefore email addresses) and having friends that have moved interstate, I find it easier to catch up with them via this method.

I don't often get on Facebook but I find it worthwhile for that reason itself.

All the other stuff, I don't bother with.

I dumped twitter after less than 24 hours.

Totally agree gadj. I have a lot family and friends overseas and it's ideal for keeping in touch when you consider how much overseas calls cost. I also know that someone on here was able to find out that family members were safe in Japan after the earthquake via Facebook.

The initial novelty of the games wore off very quickly so I just ignore all that stuff. I've also used it to complain (politely) to a mail order company that has it's own page. Ordered some shoes...sent the wrong size...returned them with request for replacement...tried to chase up via call centre and got nowhere fast so posted on their Facebook page and got my replacement order within 2 days.

Regards
JAS

I disabled mine for a week or so, one of the main reasons I keep it is to stay in contact with some close friends interstate. I don't play the games on there like Farmville etc, but find it can be useful for staying in touch with people. When disabling it, I didn't miss it, but got a few "snitchy" emails/sms's from people wanting to know why I'd deleted them. Took a little while to explain I hadn't done that.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Gone. Not missed. :-)

Having my family living interstate or overseas I thought it would be a good way to keep in touch with them. The problem was that I don't really care about what they had for breakfast, or which of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they would be. I also hated the way it was used to keep me informed of engagements, major health issues etc. Some things require a phone call. :)

Now, along with the old fashioned telephone, I just use skype or email to see how they're going.

I did open a Facebook account about a year ago when I followed a link to something and found I needed a Facebook log in to be able to see it.
I used a false name and address, and an email address created for that false ID, which I also use to create similar log ins on untrusted sites.
That person keeps getting emails reminding him he hasn't updated his account "lately".
That figures - I've never been back...

Psyber, truth is, you've got no friends, eh? I'll be your friend, truly. ;)

Actually, you're a smart man, keep off it, it's the devil's business.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.
