8.8 magnitude earthquake has hit Japan, triggering a 10m high tsunami.

So far theres been at least one death, and tsunami warnings have been issued as far away as Chile. Have a mate and her mother holidaying in Hawaii atm and they're on high tsunami alert - a tsunami is forcast to hit there in about 2.5 hours and they're packed and ready to evacuate to higher ground.

Seeing the aerial footage on the BBC here of the tsunami pushing inland and taking buildings and traffic with it I suspect that figure will rise considerably :(

Doesn't 'therisingblues' live over there??? Hope he and his family are nowhere near any of this.

The footage of the tsunami just rolling in wiping everything out is just amazing.

The tsunami is expected to wipe out some small islands.

We can be thankful for Japan's superstrict building codes meaning there's been small structural damage caused directly by the earthquake. The real damage, as we're seeing now, is from the tsunami's

Amazingly this was 160 times more powerful than the Christchurch quake.

And a tsunami to go with it.

I hope the Japanese people come out of this in the best way possible.

All the best Japan.

Fire at Japanese nuclear power plant

A utility company in northeastern Japan has reported a fire in a turbine building of a nuclear power plant after an earthquake shook the region.
Tohoku Electric Power Co. says smoke was observed coming out of the building, which is separate from the plant's reactor, and the cause is under investigation.

The plant is in Miyagi prefecture.

The company says there have been no reports of radioactive leaks or injuries.

If anyone is in any doubt about how big this one is...

The British Geological Survey tells the BBC that the Japanese earthquake is the 6th largest ever recorded (i.e. since 1900).

Also appears to have been a 7.2 quake on almost the exact same spot 2 days ago...

http://www.bgs.ac.uk/research/highlight ... h2011.html

One hell of a tsunami warning list on there too...hope they've grossly overestimated it.

Theri was the first person I thought of, the footage I've seen is just terrible, I hope we hear from him soon :(

On the lighter side (if you can call it that I guess), in one of the news reports, they had just shown the first lot of youtube clips and after the clip, the announcer said something to the effect of "I'm surprised that even through such a powerful earthquake, people didn't think of their lives, they instead got out their cameras and took this amazing footage"

and I said to my mate " whaddya mean he's surprised, they're Japanese!" ;)
