Possible electrocution causing the death of two horses in the parade ring
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20110212/tu ... 23e80.htmlRacing was abandoned at Newbury in extraordinary circumstances after two horses collapsed and died in the parade ring before the first race.
An inquiry and immediate post-mortem examinations were announced, with the reasons for the deaths of Fenix Two and Marching Song unknown amid speculation the horses died from some form of electric shock emanating from underneath the paddock.
Some horses had already made it down to the start and there were reports that others had "wobbled" on entering the paddock.
Nicky Henderson was quick to withdraw his runner Kid Cassidy, while Andy Turnell, trainer of Marching Song, said: "It looks like they've been electrocuted. My fellow seemed perfectly all right and I was about to leg him up but he just went straight down."
Jonjo O'Neill, trainer of Fenix Two, said: "Kid Cassidy was in front and he took a turn. We thought he was bucking and kicking and he went down on his knees then he seemed to be OK.
"Mine reared up and we couldn't get him back, it was like he was stuck to the ground. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my life."
Denman's owner Paul Barber was in the paddock and said: "The girl of Turnell's said she felt a tingling as she led them round and then Nicky's horse went down.
"They were getting the shocks off the grass, not off the tarmac. I've never seen anything quite like that ever."
Stipendiary steward Paul Barton said: "We are going to hold an inquiry and interview those connected with the horses."

Had I known what a hoot you'd all find it I'd have tried to record the footage of their obvious distress and pain just before they died that the dh's on Sky showed last night...that was just hillarious...you'd have loved it I'm sure.

It made the radio news over here Jas. They said there was a cable underneath the service which must've been severed. To put another spin on it, how lucky was it that there weren't more, or moreso human fatalities?

without knowing exactly i'd think the horses shoes would've 'attracted' (not sure of the term) the electricity, more so than a human, nevertheless very sad

I also think the next two posts with positive and negative are also plays on the comedic side of this....

Is this an isolated incident?
Sorry JAS it is a horrible incident, a horrible way to go frozen to the ground while a current passes though your heart until you die.
Makes me sad any animal death as they would have had no idea what is going on.
Seems odd though, normally electricity takes the path of least resistance and once it hits the earth it dissipates ie lightning
I know alot of places run electrical currents through underground metal pipes to combat corrosion.
I'm curious to find out exctly what happened here and yes it is very lucky no human life was taken but as most humans wear rubber shoes they would have been more resistant compared to a metal horse shoe or wet feet.

I must admit, I also don't find a heap of chuckles in this story. A tragic and horrible way for any animal to die.

I agree, I love horses and hope that whoever is responsible is arrested for assault and battery and thrown in a cell. I also hope this case is an isolated case. It certainly has transformed ideas I had on the industry.

You'd probably want to go and get a bit wired afterward.
