Pretty friggin ordinary behaviour IMO. It does beckon the question, what's the best punishment?

The best punishment is to get 'harder' on them when they are young.
No more 'kid' treatment - if they are dealt with properly at a younger age then maybe they wont do this kind of thing when they are then adults.
Also - other kids will realise there is a 'consequence' and it may act as a deterent.

How many kids I've heard say 'Can't do anything to me/them because I/they are U18'

Needs to really seriously get looked at.
Actions should = consequences !

Just my 2c worth.

That footage made me feel sick - I would hate to think that one of my kids would be treated like that anywhere let alone at school.

Absolutley disgusting, horrible and every other word similar :( :(

While i agree that what happened is a disgrace, and shouldnt be tolerated at all in schools or anywhere public for that matter, im actually shocked at (trying to find the right word, but probably wont come across how i mean it to) how non violent the footage is.

The reports on the radio, that it was 4 on 1 etc and and the use of 'bashing' etc is possibly over stating the incident. King hit may have been better use of phrase maybe?

Obviously the poor kid was set up, by gutless bullies who picked on a kid they knew wouldnt or couldnt fight back.

Ahh, personal opinion... if you're adult enough to commit an adult crime, you get the adult punishment I'm afraid. The only exception is that if you're under a certain age, you don't go to 'adult' prisons.

Deterrent is the key IMO. My mate who's a parole officer/counsellor practices the mantra that if someone makes a mistake then it's easier to rehabilitate them than put them in jail. He says, putting them in jail makes them more likely to reoffend. That might be so, however, if you give them deterrent they wont offend in the first place. Knowing you can "get away with it" is the complete opposite.

At the same time they have the death penalty in the US and that hardly seems much of a deterrent to murdering people over there.

Been happening since schools were invented.
People are shocked cause it's on mobile phone footage.

Don't think it hasn't been happening for XXXXXX amount of years.

I would like to add that I don;'t envy being a teacher these days.
They have little or no disciplinary rights against todays youth and it must be a hard job to handle.

Agreed. Just a disgraceful, senseless attack.

The purpetrator should be expelled, no ifs ands or buts about that. Also, the book has to be thrown at him by the courts. The judge needs to have the balls to make an example of scum like that.

The brat that put it on Facebook should be done as an accessory and also expelled.

Given the rate of crime in the US and the amount of people in prisons I think they still need to have that penalty.
I mean how many countries around the world can maintain a reality tv series for 20 odd years involving crime unless it wasn't there to capture it.

I went to Craigmore South Primary and Craigmore High School, that stuff has been happening there regulary for a very long time, there was a stabbing back when i was in year 8 there. Only difference no one filmed incidents back then.

If you catch the kids lock them up like adults.

I saw ALOT worse than that at my high school.

No phone to record and no teacher ever found out.

On a weekly basis...

This incident wasn't a bashing or a king hit, just a old fashioned sucker punch.

Hopefully with cameras so readily available now it might stop these kind of cowardly attacks so i hope the system makes a statement with this case.

Sadly this stuff is not just confined to Craigmore High. Social media has made it far easier to put individuals under pressure with baseless facts and innuendo. I put it down to Society allowing hands off parenting and the parents blaming everyone else but their own short comings as a parent.

The do-gooders of this world outlawing certain parenting methods have alot to answer for as children know that this threat is no longer seen as the right option for discipline

I think kids are largely desensitised towards violence because they see characters in computer games or tv cops and robbers shows get bashed and then get and walk away relatively unharmed. Parental influence is also diminished these days and so young apprentice thugs think it is cool to belt someone who is different or who threatens their place in the hierarchy. IMO Social workers and do-gooders miss the point completely but you cant tell them that because they know more than the rest of us put together. Meanwhile thuggery blossoms in our schools while policy makers duck for cover.
Then again I could be wrong.
Caution! You are now entering the no-spin zone...

No, it was a king hit. The recipient was rendered unconscious i.e a knockout. So it was a king hit.

This sort of shit happened everyday when I went to school in the 60s. Teachers and parents were kept right out of it. "Dobbing" would result in no one other than a teacher talking to you for years. If were a victim you learnt how to fight, but you might still get beaten up, but if you hurt the other bloke enough they usually left you alone in future. Political correctness and hand wringing trendies are turning kids into "the piss weak generation". I desensitised to violence because my parents let me watch "The Three Stooges"

I don't give a toss how long it has been going on for, this kind of thuggery is wrong on all levels.
The victim was just trying to walk past, was not antagonising his attacker, nor was aggressive.
I have 3 young kids, 2 boys & a little girl, one who is just starting year 1 & the other 2 to start in the next 2-3 years.
I bring my kids up with good values, respect your elders & other people for who they are etc. yet i am a realist. As i was also bullied at school until i fought back ( for which i got in trouble ), i am teaching all my kids self defence & most importantly to fight back if neccessary.
I fear for all my kids growing up in this ever denegrating cesspool of todays society, and fear that childrens beautiful natures will be eroded before thay leave primary school.
Isn't it bad enough thay suffer peer group pressure for what they wear, eat, watch, listen to, their size, sporting ability, cars their parents have, hair styles etc etc etc, now they get whacked for walking along innocently.
Throw the perpetrator in a mans jail & see how tough he is.
And for people saying it has been going on for years, you are right, but it does not make it right. It may have toughened me up, but it left me F&^%$n bitter.
