The media - good or bad?

The media influences us all in a variety of ways. We read newspapers, magazines, watch tv news and current affairs and avail ourselves to e-news on a plethora of sites. Many of us sit back and digest all this stuff before putting our own particular spin on it. It then becomes the water cooler topic du jour.
So are you happy with your local newspapers and the way they report news and sport etc? Do you find yourself cursing the tv because it is reporting with a Liberal or Labor bias that opposes your view of the world?
What should editors do that would please you?

They tell us what they want us to believe.

One thing I do watch with interest, and that's Media Watch. It's one of those things - you sort of believe the diatribe till presented with a different opinion or set of facts.

Yeah MP. I just watched Paul Murray Live on Sky News and he played the freakin' clip over and over. I dunno if that is biased reporting or not. I switched to Two and a half Men. Abbott should know better in this age of eavesdropping media types and I suppose the media has an obligation to show this stuff.
I'd like to see someone claim the credit for Gillard's teary speech in the house this arvo. I believe it would have been written for her and I further believe she rehearsed the crocodile tears to catch up with the Anna Bligh stealing the show scenario. But the left wing media is steering clear and the right wing media is so dumb they haven't thought of it yet.

Abbott's a muppet, just seen on sbs when a reporter asked him how it was taken out of context, he froze, went mute and just wobbled his head like a toy dog on a dashboard. Not real good options to lead our country at the moment

Abott seemed to be restraining himself from snotting the reporter. It was appalling but either way as leader of the opposition I think he has handed the reins to Turnbull perhaps

That's just what he did when he was at Woodside recently and a resident reminded him that only a very small fraction of immigrants arrive by boat!

I haven't seen the footage but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right DV - I don't get the impression that she is 100% sincere at times.

And which left-wing mainstream media outlet would that be?

The media should ideally

1. present the facts and allow consumers to make their own minds up.
2. spend more time and effort undertaking investigative journalism and not relentlessly pursuing tabloid journalism.
3. dump the unwritten code of not 'ratting' on a peer - eg this week they complained when Foley noted a journalist was asking dumb questions and the journo herself admitted she wasn't very intelligent. The journo's name was suppressed yet ironically the media spend a lot of time, energy and money fighting court-ordered suppression orders.
4. Consideration should be given to the establishment of an independent panel to fulfil an ombudsman type role, specifically to compel journo's to confidentially reveal their sources to the panel if it is an issue. This would prevent unscrupulous types from simply saying they have a source and expecting us all to take their word for it.
5. The ACMA should assert itself far more than it does to remind licensed media that they must comply with their licence conditions. Further, that all media should be compelled to fulfil certain community service responsibilities - eg interupting their programs (live) to broadcast emergency warnings.

Just off the top of my head, there's a few.....

Not just her...I believe they all suffer from delusions of adequacy and policy advisors feed their own views into the pipeline

Misleading or exaggerated headlines are a constant sin of the print media.
The actual article can be good quality, but the headline writers can really drag it down.
But straightforward phrases won't grab much attention, will they?

Actually one that gets to me is the mainstream media's sensationalistic reporting of anything happening within the "new-tech media", such as twitter or facebook.
Twitter is not a credible source (without further verification).

-Endless speculation to keep a story running.
-The multitude of fluff that makes up about 90% of sports news.
-Storm in a teacup stories being milked for weeks

The real problem lies in the concentration of MSM ownership (part of the reason we rank so poorly in the 'press freedom' index compared to other OECD nations) and hidden corporate agendas.

Reject the MSM and seek alternative sources of news.
