woollies the bullies !!!!

Postby bayman » Thu Feb 03, 2011 11:02 pm

i was driving down marion road west richmond today & a woolworths petrol station has 'popped up' next door to the united petrol station (obviously it's an independant) & they have a sign out saying ''support your local business not wollies the bullies'' (i had a chuckle)....i think when we can we should all support local business because the moment the locals disappear whether that be a deli, petrol stations or whatever, the cheaper price will go as then they will have a monopoly on it.....forgetting the old discount voucher there wasn't much difference in the price today

support the locals if & when you can
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I used to work at the bottlo on the corner there and Woolies were desperate to buy that liberty servo, but the owner wouldnt budge....eventually the ex-church on the corner came up for sale...and whatta ya know Woolies bought it, knocked it down and put in a servo!. I worked for Woolies in their liquour division for 4 years and their greed and desire to knock out small local businesses is unfortunately driven by extremely greedy shareholders and an intrinsic desire to be bigger and better than Coles Myer.

Woolies wanted to build a dirty big supermarket in my suburb.

The main street of Erskineville is full of small retailers, pubs and cafes.

Locals embarked on a long-running campaign to stop Woolies moving in.

People power won!

They also stopped The Imperial putting a giant stiletto on its roof in honour of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert...

as much as i hate paying rediculos prices for fuel with the amount of miles i do a week and woolies/coles pushing the little man out dont forget they were the little man all those years ago. They were nothing years and years ago they have just developed into the giants they are today.

Im sure if any of us here were the owners of woolies/coles we would not have a problem .dont forget they were pushed out also during their development and we the comsumer have made them what they are today.
I dont disagree here at all with the topic but they use to be the little man years and years ago. Some supermarket chain from the USA is coming here in a few years and have been tipped to topple woolies/coles and this is making them scared (trust me i know).
coles and woolies are the bullies yes but they use to be nothing all those years ago also and are just trying to make their business grow. If you were the owners you would do them same like i said before...why let the little man like them develop like them and push you out??

like that south park episode with the starbucks coffee chain openng next to the local (tweeks dad) coffee shop and trying to buy him and push him out and the locals realised starbucks were nothing before their might

I shop at woolies all the time. I hate it. I complain (to myself of course) when they shufle the fixtures around so you have to embark on a search mission to get stuff that was two aisles over last week. I get angry when 27 people line up at two checkouts while 13 checkouts remain closed. I get sad when one of my favourite products is discontinued because of "lack of volume" which is retailer code for "the supplier has refused to be screwed any more so we don't buy of him/her".
But.........I am addicted to Qantas Frequent Flyer points and I love using them up by tarting around overseas on every possible occasion that I can.

My shopping centre down South has both Foodland and Woollies in it. The latter established around 3-4 years ago, and there was a perception that they would force out Foodland and the local fruit and veg shop. Interestingly, both shops still thrive there, with the locals seemingly very keen to support both of them.

I usually shop at Foodland there, for the great service, good prices and knowing its supporting a more local store than the giants.

Excellent point Bulldog. Where does the community see the line between a small bloke doing well, and becoming too big? Stratco seem to be going through this at the moment - seem to be continually growing, but are they starting to push out the little man?

I reckon we shop at the same place then CK O:)

The other good thing about Foodland is they seem to try and buy local - where they can.
For instance I'm pretty sure they are the only supermarket that sells Beerenberg products?

We have a coles close by - which I use when convenient.
The only thing I go into Woolworths for is if they have cheap drink/can specials.

O:)

I reckon we do, Mum - the same shopping centre as the Caffe Acqua "All You Can Eat" breakfast on Sunday mornings for $11.90, which I used to love, before the diet and exercise regime forbade it :(

I love their Saltimbocca dish :D

Shareholdings as your main source of income are a difficult path, and a source of recurring ambivalence..

As a shareholder directly in Woolworths, and indirectly via Wesfarmers in Coles, I have been complaining to both of them about pushing the lines I want off shelves to replace them with Home Brand lines most of which I've tried once and vowed "never again". On the other hand I do buy, for example, McCains frozen meals at either for $6.79 - sometimes as low as $5.00 - rather than pay $8.25 at the local Romeo's.
I've also advised Telstra that as a shareholder I don't use - or recommend to friends - any Telstra services because they are too bloody expensive.

Aldi is a supermarket chain on the eastern states of australia. possibly only brisbane i think. But they are a german company and they are in comp with woolies and coles. But their product lines arent that good example -

a mars bar is called a mix bar
packet of allens snakes are some brand from overseas high in sugar
biscuits they have are like arnotts but not arnotts and are ten times the sweetness and sugar content..
a cherry ripe bar is called a ripple bar etc etc..

all the brands the big chains dont stock. but their fruit and veg is top quality. their checkout servers dont pack your bags for you u have to do that yourself. the opperators sit in a chair and dont move. Maybe 4 isles in each shop that are normally jammed pack with people.

They're in Sydney as well - saw one at the Manly wharf when I was there last year.

Aldi's is basically the Ikea of supermarkets.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

Had several beers at the Manly Wharf pub in the New Year but didn't see any Aldi supermarket. Then again, when are you going to look at shop fronts when presented with other top quality visual aids such as are in abundance right there!

Woolies are also screwing the local producers and driving many of them out of business .. If they continually knock their opposition on the head, then in theory we would be at their mercy at the checkout.

Business is business and I understand that, but I try to avoid Coles and Woolies where possible, but that's just me.
