i have never bought anything from them because the fruit & veg (they mainly sell fruit as a rule) seem to sit in the sun for days, & when there is a very hot spell or indeed a heatwave i have concerns, so i'm not so sure whether that's a good recipe to buy from, granted i/we don't know what happens before they hit a supermarket shelf & perhaps they 'sit out the back' for a while................anyone know whether the supermarket or roadside is better ???

Little store on left of Port Wakefield road heading out, usually is okay.
Sams at St Agnes are generally very good, even with a change in ownership a couple years ago.
Like anything, any small indepedent seems to value quality and service a lot more.
A lot of these roadside stores seem to be weekend jobs, so if the fruit is in season, you can be pretty confident it has been picked within the last week or so.

Oranges from Hampstead Road, Clearview (across the road from the Vet), the rest of my fruit and veg comes from Parafield Gardens. They won't pass on the effects of the cyclone or floods like Woolies.

The intended campaign of Leon Byner (Don't Sell Australia Short)
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Dont-S ... 2979857362 is about land being sold off to overseas investors without due care to its consequences. However, the spin-offs are immense. You go to the local fruit and veg places, butchers etc. you support the local producers because they work directly with the farmers. This puts the money back to the farmers who can continue to cultivate without being at their wits end and selling off the land. Whereas you see Woolworths and co. for instance truck fruit from North Queensland to their Brisbane warehouse, only for it to go back to where it came to be sold in a North Queensland Woolworths. No wonder the prices are as high - buy it dirt cheap and sell it for 300% margins!

Same thing happens in NT. Mangoes are picked in Katherine and surrounds, then sent to Adealaide and then back to Katherine. (surprise surprise it was REALLY hard to sell "local" mangoes at Woolies in katherine)

This is the go.
It's not so much the chemicals sprayed on them, it's about the gasses they're stored in to stop the breakdown of the produce. It's not going to kill you but the fruit isn't going to be overly pleasant after months of sitting around, no matter how it's stored.
There's an apple orchard south of Perth and I'd forgotten what apples are meant to taste like, they're magnificent straight off the tree and it's easy to just polish off a bag in a couple of days.

I heard they use cold storage to keep fruit for months and release it as they need to (Coles and Woolies I mean).
Coles and Woolies are rapidly becoming less popular than the big 4 banks!
Sorry Bayman, slightly off topic

Apples are the number one, some products just cant survive but apples the varieties of apples are NOT in season anywhere as long as they are at the supermarkets.....having been a store manager at one of the big two it opens the eyes to what REALLY happens at the local supermarket

I love the selling concept, of presenting a great looking store/display to the customer and having them buy more they wanted or something they hadnt planned on buying, but the other shit that goes on, makes me glad that Im not in that environment anymore

I had the pleasure of working the loading dock at Alice Springs woolies during my gap year and to see a truck I just emptied go up to Katherine to pick up some mangoes to take back to Adelaide to bring back to Alice was truly amazing. Seemed to be a case of woolies having a lot of cents, but none of it common

I don't understand why people rate the Central Market - it's a smelly, filthy hole and I certainly wouldn't touch any food there with a 30 foot pole. I prefer the local fruit and veg shop, most are a hell of alot cleaner than the Central Market and are fresher (and cheaper) than the supermarkets.

I work about 5 minutes from the Market and love it, personally. Sometimes after a very busy morning, it's great to wander around, get a bag of Charlesworth Nuts to nibble and wander around the stalls. Some bargains to be had, but yes, its not the tidiest place in the state.

Don't bother travelling anywhere in South East Asia if you think the Central Market is filthy. You'd be appalled at just about everything.
I personally love the Central Market. Great food, great vibe. The food court is the best.

I enjoy the central market - we dont get in there as much as I would like, but everytime its a positive experience and have never had any issues with any produce or other foods purchased.
