Disinterested? Crap at your job? ... here's $50K

Now I know there are many, many wonderful and dedicated teachers out there but ...

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/now-its-o ... 5996691680

The State Government's decision to reward poorly performing teachers with $50,000 to quit has drawn a mixed reaction.
One respected education commentator has warned the move may encourage some teachers to underperform to gain the cash bonus.

The State Government plan will result in a one-off "teacher refreshment scheme" offering the payment to older teachers whose enthusiasm and energy has waned, in order to free up opportunities for graduates and younger teachers.

Skilled teachers still with passion for the profession will not be offered the cash. Instead, they will be encouraged to stay on as mentors for younger teachers.

So let me get this right ... if you're sick of your job, are hopeless or just don't give a stuff, we're going to reward you with $50K.

If you're hard working, dedicated and a credit to your profession, we'll give you SFA.

:-s

FFS, reward the good teachers and performance manage out the useless ones.

It's not that hard really.

Another reason to get rid of tenure for public servants.

I work in a poultry processing plant and am extremely disinterested 99% of the time .... where's my handout??

It is interesting that all of the teachers I know are constantly stating there is a supposed shortage of teachers yet the Government are offering an incentive to leave the profession? This should be added to the 'things I don't understand' thread!

I'd like to know how they manage that.

I don't know why the current system makes it so hard to get rid of teachers who are incompetent, often they are just moved to another school where they are equally poor. Now they are going to pay them 50 grand so that they will quit. Why can't the department just say, "This job clearly isn't for you, goodbye."

Becuase that would be too Easy and the unions would not like or allow that.

I'd love to as well, I've spent the last week and a half working from home and constantly take work home with me during the year.

I'm not sure what the answer is to the problem, we keep hearing for years there's been a shortage and yet I know plenty of graduate teachers who can't find short-term contracts. The whole contract/permanent issue is one that needs to be changed, if the government want to keep graduating teachers in the profession then they need to offer more job security. It isn't too much fun spending every Christmas and New Year wondering whether you have a job for the next year or not, and this causes a lot of younger teachers, especially those trying to buy a home or those paying a mortgage, to look for more security elsewhere (50% of graduating teachers leave the profession in their first five years out).

Due to relationships and such, i moved over to victoria to teach last year after graduating from flinders in 2009. this came after working in 3 schools during one year on one term contracts. since i have moved here, i have been given a permanent position and have far more job security then i could have got in SA. IMO the DECS system is flawed in so many ways and just giving a bad teacher 50k will not fix anything.

You both have correctly hit the nail on the head of one of the biggest issues confronting retaining teachers in the system.

Another example that western society is dumbing down.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

A mate of mine, took a package from a major US based drug company, he'd formally been a university professor, he returned to Australia and decided at 54 it was too young to retire, he did a Dip Ed and got a job as a teacher in a private school they love science teachers with PhDs....reckons teaching is the easiest job he's ever had.....I digress good teachers will take the $50K and get a job in the private education sector. Good one Mikey and co. so glad you're running the state

Is this deal for teachers is, like the other state public service shake ups, related to reducing superannuation liabilities because the state ALP government has spent the state Superannuation funds again?
If so, you would think they would have learned from the Bannon experience...

dedja, mate, a pedantic point.

Your title should have read 'Uninterested", not 'Disinterested".

There are a large amount of really good teachers who leave the profession every year because there is no job secutiry or they havent been able to find enough work in the last 12 months to survive with a family, mortgage/rent and all of lifes other expenses. If this 50k thing allows older teachers, who clearly shouldnt be there or no longer want to be there to vacate a teaching job which can then give to someone who wants it more, then thats a good thing.

The complete lack of job security here is tough. I worked full time in a classroom last year, the majority of 2009 and a part of 2008 (my first year as a teacher). This year due to the government deciding to have less contract workers at our school I am now sitting at home. It's tough. I know in a couple of months work will start coming in quite steadily, but for now there is nothing. So many good teachers are in this position, so they will go off to find temporary work somewhere else, and many will never return to teaching.
