According to an Auspoll survey of over 4,000 residents about the city they live in. NSW Premier Kristina Keneally was less than impressed with the finding:

"I did a bit of a survey myself this morning and I checked the population figure," she told reporters on Saturday.

"The population of Adelaide - a little bit over 1.2 million people. The population of Sydney - a bit more than 4.5 million people. I think those figures speak for themselves.

"Adelaide is a great city but if it's so fantastic why aren't more people living there?"

She does have a point.

If population equaled livability, then I guess the slums of Mumbai with over 5 million alone must be better than Sydney.

I would've thought the fact that there isn't 4.5 million here is what makes it very liveable.

Adelaide was more liveable in the 1970s, I lived in Berlin 20 years ago (population 3.5 million) it was in many ways easy to get around. Adelaide is good if you live in the inner suburbs, but I would hate to live in the outer areas and be totally dependent on a car to get around.

I have visited over 30 countries on 4 continents and agree that Adelaide is a very liveable city!

I'm here now partly because here I can live in the clean air of the hills and have easy access to anywhere I want to got in about 20 minutes by car.
In Melbourne it took 4 times as long to get where I wanted to go from the hills.
If I had to live in a capital city or suburban environment I'd choose Melbourne just for the better air quality.

Generally, I like smaller cities and towns, and, but for the fact that all my old friends and remaining relatives are here, I may have chosen somewhere like Bundaberg.
However, I also like classical music and theatre which forces me back to the bigger cities - at least in Australia.

Melbourne has such good air quality you can't even see the CBD until you get to Footscray for all the smog.

It is horses for courses I guess.
My judgement is based on personal experience and influenced by personal sensitivities:
1. My wife's asthma gave her less trouble during our 10 years in Melbourne than it did here - even when we lived in an inner area - Malvern.
2. My own tendency to skin and upper respiratory tract issues did better there too - here I have to live outside the city.

I agree that Melbourne's skies look grey from outside, but Melbourne is much more clear on the eastern side than in its west.
[Although my wife was reasonably OK in Point Cook visiting friends too, but that may have just been a few good days.]

Adelaide's skies tend to be brown in the Summer and the murk never seems to clear.
That may be an effect of the hills forming a bowl into which the prevailing wind blows.
I had hoped to be able to live somewhere like Stonyfell, when I returned in 2009.
But, while staying with friends there while house hunting in January 2009, I developed the chronic cough that I never had in Melbourne within a few days.
[Admittedly, not as severely as when I stayed with friend in Davoren Park.]

This article makes me laugh as it highlights the arrogance and attitude of Sydney-siders! Firstly, the article emphasises Sydney being the lowest ranked city rather than Adelaide being the highest. Secondly, it shows that Sydney-siders believe the world revolves completely around them! How dare a survey show that Sydney isn't the greatest place in the world! It must be wrong!!

I know so many people from Adelaide who have moved to Sydney over the years and raved about how great it is for career, nightlife, beaches, events etc. in the first few months. With the exception of 1 or 2, every single one of them are now back in Adelaide citing affordability, relaxed lifestyle etc. I live in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region and (despite it's recent massive population growth) I think it is great. Countless local wineries, restaurants, cafes etc., 10 mins to the beach (Pt. Noarlunga, Moana, Aldinga, Maslins , etc), 30 mins to Victor, 40 mins (on a good day) to the CBD. Very 'livable'.

Been to a few cities myself and agree, there is no place like home. Hard to see myself living anywhere but in SA.

funny thing is they ranked themselves the lowest so it seems the Premier is in the minority

Being in Brisbane now i still see Adelaide as home myself but i would never go back there and live again. I am settled here in QLD but yes i can see that Adelaide would be the best city to live in. No traffic , cheaper etc and sucked into Sydney for Adelaide being voted better. Adelaide is at a stage that its good before to many people start living there. I say keep the population where it is as its good that way for alot of reasons. Adelaide is home yes and good on yahs for getting something over the eastern states Good for premoting the city and state but its surely pissed alot of pollys off in the eastern states. But the NSW premeir is correct when she says if adelaide is so good why is it so small etc.


But i love Brisbane alot now would never leave here. Also in the fastest growing area and the fastest growing state of QLD.
Brisbane population is 2.3 million at the moment.Driving to Gold Coast today on the 8 lane (4 each way) pacific motorway and it was packed in both directions. Adelaide doesnt have something like this to get out of the city for a few hours thats not to far. Victor is there but its not really established as a great place to visit.
I think for a start you need to introduce compulsory council voting. Might kick some of the dead beats out of the chambers that get to comfortable down there. its compulsory up here.

Only problem with the road to Victor Harbor is the quickest way there is through some hilly terrain. So it's not really ideal to build a 4 lane two each way road all the way.

and theres not 600,000 ppl that live in victor harbour like the gold coast so there would be no need for a four lane each way highway
