Using EXCEL

Postby the big bang » Mon Jan 17, 2011 4:22 pm

wasn't sure where to post this, as it has several categories (AFL, gambling, IT), so mods, feel free to move to where you deem fit. cheers.

basically, last year with two of my mates, i ran a "punting comp" on the AFL.

we had $50 to spend on any AFL bets we wanted to, from head to head, to multi's and first goal kickers, whatever you wanted. we kept track, and whoever made the most proifit at the end, won the comp.

i'm looking at doing the same thing, but bigger and better, and involving a heap more people. so i was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on if EXCEL would be my best option? if not, what would be? if so, is it hard to figure out what i would need it for?

hard to say how many participants o'll have, but for now we'll work on 20.

the way i ran it last season, the other 2 lads sent me a message on facebook (easiest way for all 3 of us to be able to see each others bets and chat/banter between ourselves).

for example, this is how the message on FB would look on the friday night......

LEADERBOARD AFTER Rd 3.....

Big Bang +$115.50
Steve +$43.90
Mark -$11.10

round 4

Big Bang's bets.

$10 on collingwood win over 15pts @ $1.45 = $14.50
$20 on multi, coll/geel/dogs/freo wins @ $2.95 = $59.00
$20 on LeCras first goal kicker @ $8.00 = $160

steve's bets

$25 on crows under 39.5pts @ $3.40 = $85
$25 on geelong v hawthorn qtr by qtr, haw/geel/geel/geel @ $11.00 = $275

mark's bets

$10 on andrew swallow most disposals @ $14 = $140
$10 on jack riewoldt most goals of the round @ $6 = $60
$30 on multi pies over 15/geel/ freo over 39.5/ @ $5.05 = $151.50

then, at the completion of round 4, i'd go through all our bets and figure out the leaderboard ready to head into the next week. with 3 of us, i was more than happy to just figure it all out manually, and update it all myself. but with 20 peoople, would love to be able to figure out something to make it a lil bit easier. i understand i'll still have to be switched on to weather or not the bets were successful, but any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Using excel you can easily keep track of bank balances etc..

Just set the formulas at the start so all you have to do is enter the numbers..

Get rid of Brad, he's a bad gambler.

And there are some syndicate spreadsheets available online that you may be able to tweak.
