Queensland Floods Disaster - Donate 1800 219 028

Postby Rik E Boy » Tue Jan 11, 2011 8:27 am

Last night an 'inland Tsnami' from Toowoomba through to a little town called Grantham claimed the lives of eight people. The towns West of Ipswich are cut off as the Warrego Highway has been closed. It is still raining today (right through to Saturday says the Radio) and they reckon the Brisbane River will reach 3m on Wednesday threatening the state capital for the first time.

The Wivenhoe Dam is at 106% capacity and the road that runs over it is almost under. We have to release the water from the dam occaisonaly and more water runs into the Brisbane. One bloke was on the radio today saying that the water went over the gutter of his street and three minutes later it was up to his window sill.

regards,

Only last March I was driving through the area between Bundaberg and Brisbane then down to Coomera and across to Goondiwindi,
It is hard to reconcile the TV pictures with these places as I saw them.

I've been in touch with friends up there on line, to check how they are doing, and so far all are unaffected.
One guy I know in Bargara has a shallow pool at the bottom of his back yard, but nothing worse.
Bargara is beach-side and he thinks he'll be fine unless there is a Tsunami as well.

Now I've asked the question of a friend who lives south of Perth...

Truly is a remarkable set of circumstances effecting QLD at this point in time. Can only hope no further lives are lost and people remain safe. We cant stop the water from doing what it does but remaining safe must be the priority.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Know Toowoomba quite well as I have family up there. Seeing that footage of cars being tossed around like toys down the main street is shocking.

ABC is reporting that 72 people are still missing. Crazy stuff.

The Swich has been spared so far. The river we are on is called the Bremer. That is due to peak soon as well but my house is in a place called Eastern Heights which should remain dry.

Hope your rellies are OK Gingernuts!

The family home in the country was innundated with the floods at the end of 1992 that went through the Adelaide Hills. We were incredibly lucky, in that, despite being on stilts, no water flowed through the house, even though water was well over the level of the floors. The garage, garden and all outside was completely wrecked at the time and took ages to restore.

What is happening in Queensland is so, so much more terrible and the small experience I had with this just sends chills up my spine at the horror they are facing. Thoughts and prayers go out to all of them, what a horrific situation.

Should the govt be taking some responsibility for this?? I mean why are people allowed to build houses without stilts in areas which are known for having large amounts of rainfall?

This is hard to get the head around.

We come out of a 10year drought a year ago and now this.

The Murray is filling up, the lower lakes are filling up.. who would've thought.

Imagine having to get in your ceiling, cut a hole through your tin roof and sit up there hoping to be saved while your life washes away beneath you.

I feel sorry for the countless livestock and pets

I spent a few months workign up in Toowoomba and have some good friends up there who are devastated by this occurence. If you don't know Toowoomba its situated on the range so I feel for the people of the lower lying areas too like Gatton etc too who's area sits at the basin of 2 big ranges and floods when there's 10mls of rain....

Shocked to see the photos of the main street just a raging torrent of water...
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

My heart goes out to everyone up there. It makes you wonder if we are going to be spared in SA as well. If we keep getting all of this rain, surely it has a chance to affect the many towns on the Murray. One can only hope it doesn't get to that situation but after what has happened up North, who knows.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep

No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

When I moved to Brisbane in 2005, the combined dam levels reached a dire 13%
It prompted fairly strict water restrictions and the state govt to build a desal plant on the Gold Coast.
Although now completed, the desal plant has been shutdown and obviously won't be required for quite some time.

When you read about and see photos of the 1974 floods in Brisbane itself, it was pretty devastating.
The Wivenhoe dam was built to prevent such a disaster from occurring again.
Even this won't be enough to prevent some flooding from happening down stream.

Clearly though the country areas are in far worse shape and it will take years for those areas to recover.
The amount of rain that has been falling in the state is simply "monsoonal".
It really has been in "holy %^&*" proportions.

Had more than enough at my place as well, but fortunately my drainage is reasonable (being on a sloping block helps somewhat).

Meanwhile...

Perth is having the opposite problem now - 4 houses (so far) destroyed in bushfires in Lake Clifton, south of Perth

Not as big a crisis as Queensland but still devastating for those affected.

All my in laws live in a country town called Dalby which is a 45 minute drive from Toowoomba.

They have been affected hugely as well with lots of hours damaged and people struggling to get to everyday supplies.

Really sad state of affairs in QLD.
