ahhhh erm no she's not  After discovering that mine was the one breed (Zanussi) that is most difficult to open up to work on and the fact that it was already over 13 yo I decided I couldn't diy it without some serious help and it isn't worth the cost of a tradie and to let it die.

Nearest launderette is about 10 miles away so rather than cancel Op Wombat, as I couldn't afford both a new washer/dryer and the trip, I'm currently making do with a portable twin tub (the sort you can get for caravans) and a flat that looks like a chinese laundry most of the week :?

But as I spent most of my career in barracks making do with twin tubs then a few months of that is a relatively minor inconvenience me thinks.

JAS

Try switching it on again and see what happens.

I kid you not...someone is seriously screwing with my universe. Mine died weeks ago...drum stopped turning so thought the belt had gone. So on a bizarre whim today I thought I'd switch it on to see if the dyer still gave out heat to help dry some clothes even if the drum wouldn't move    it's working again...the drum's turning again...washer and dyer :-o 8-[

My theory is that when I dragged it out from under the worktop to try and open it up I must have jarred something back into place :-??

My Miele dryer stopped working the other day, so I turned it off, rotated the drum both ways to see if it seemed stuck, and voila it was working.
Then I consulted the manual - it turned out there is an overload mechanism and turning the drum backwards after turning it off is how you reset it.

I really must stop falling for the optimism trick by getting my hopes up about stuff...they catch me out every time.

Got about 3/4 through the cycle and stopped turning again...new theory...friction heats belt, old age makes belt stretch slightly so belt slips and won't turn drum. oh well back to the twintub.

JAS

So, new belt or bigger pulley if belt unavailable?

In the past week or so, we did that Jas. We turned it off, turned it on (as every good IT person will attest you should do) and it stayed 'knackered'. It was working, but not going through the cycles. Then we had the Simpson repairman out who said it would be 300 to get it fixed (on top of the 95 call out fee). The repairman said that "spending 300 will fix it, but the machine is nearly 10 years old and the motor might only last another year. You're better off putting that 300 toward a new machine". Sold. We went to Harvey Norman yesterday and looked at machines and for 900 you can get a new one that's much much bigger than ours.

On top of that, if you buy a machine before 30 November, you can get a 200 rebate from the government. We haggled with the salesman (not very much) and got the machine for 822 (ie, 622 when you get the rebate).

I noted that when I got home from the shops last night, the old machine was struggling even more. In fact the spin cycle was dormant - or 'anti-spin'.

So unfortunately we've become one of those families I said we never would - one that ditches (almost) perfectly good equipment for new stuff.

If anyone wants our old machine, please let me know, otherwise it's going out on the footpath. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone but if you want one to fix up - and you can do it yourself it mightn't cos that much to get working properly.

Make : Simpson
Year : circa 2000
Model : dunno
Capacity : 5.5kgs
Time to go through cycles : normally about 30 minutes, now - it keeps going for as long as you let it.

In summary I'm thinking the old machine actually NEW the rebate was finishing up and hence died just in time for us to obtain the 200 bucks rebate on the new one. Karma?
