Breaking the habit

I've got a mate trying to quit smoking.
He is eight days in and after being tempted to go buy a pack all weekend, he managed to resist.
Is anyone else on here trying to quit?
I would like some experiences of others who have quit to pass on and hopefully help him stay on track.

This time last year I went cold turkey for a month...
Then got stressed with work and thought, 1 would be okay - which turned to 2, to 3 to 5 to buying a pack to back to a pack a day smoker...
I quit then because my wife was pestering me so I did it to keep her off my back - needless to say she was straight back onto me when I took it up again...
Woke up one morning with a chest/throat infection and went out to start my day (@6.30am) with my smoke and coffee. Couldn't stand the taste of it as it was burning my throat on the way down. Flicked it to the ground, stamped it out and said F@#K IT - I'M QUITTING FOR ME THIS TIME !!!
This coming Wednesday will be 4 months 'cold turkey' without one cigarette after I have been a pack a day smoker for the last 5 or so years.
There have been a few tempting moments when on the turps or stressed out or when I did my knee and was told I have to have a reco but have not given in to temptation ONCE.
Simple answer - MIND POWER mate...
I tell myself not to do it and I don't because this time I quit for me and I don't want to get back on them EVER...

I'm giving up this Saturday. Having a nice quiet day in my boat with a couple of lads and going to see if I can go a whole day without one. If I can get through that, I'll be able to get through anything

My kids is the reason I quit smoking. I quit in 2005. But everytime I feel like a ciggie I remember my kids and refuse to have one. It is a hard habit to break but one of the most rewarding ones to break.

Cheers Phil. He tells me the temptation is so strong. How long can he expect the cravings to linger?

I just failed in my very first attempt OnSong.
Cold Turkey lasted two weeks, then a big weekend on teh gas, with everyone around me smoking, was too hard to resist.

I don't know that that would be overly interesting OnSong.
Day 1: I didn't have a smoke.
Day 2: See above...
Day 3: More of the same.
I could try and be a literary genius, and speak about my anguish at restraining myself, but it wasn't that hard last time...
Until the grog started...

Cold turkey about 15 years ago. If you want to stop smoking just don't do it anymore. If that doesn't work read Rock Brynner's autobiography of his father called 'YUL...the man who would be king'. The chapter where he is dying of lung cancer seemed like hell on earth. **** that for a joke.

My Dad was a pack a day smoker and just resigned himself to the fact it was too hard to give up.
He died last year at 58 smoking related with four grandy's between 2-7 who miss him.
Selfish habit that I can't stand, stuff the tax revenue and just ban them.....
