Where were you??

Postby Footy Chick » Wed Sep 08, 2010 12:51 pm

I can't believe it's been almost 10 years since 9/11 - you'll always remember where you were and what you were doing when you first heard the news.

I woke up at around 3am that morning because I forgot to put the sleep timer on the telly, I saw something about breaking news on the telly but being essentially still asleep I just switched it off and went back to sleep. It wasn't until I woke up that morning that I realised what it was.

So where were you when you first heard about the following?

9/11 - see above

Diana's death -At Nanna's, I was house-sitting while she was overseas. I was reading the paper and the newsflash came on Sportsworld.

The Bali Bombings - In the car on Dequeteville Terrace.

Michael Hutchence's death - at Paddys Market in the furniture store :(

9/11 in bed at home watching it on tv.

Diana's death, at a mates place watching the footy and then they stopped showing the footy and all we heard was crap on that. I wrote a letter to the advertiser having a go at channel 7 and received about 10 letters addressed to me at Berri saying i was an inconsiderate prick.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep

9/11 At my parents house. Went there for tea ended up staying up all night glued to the TV
Saw most of it happen live. The fact that we had all stood on the roof of the towers when we went to NY
made it seem all the more surreal

Diana's death

In a packing shed at Montcute having 'race day" with Eastern Rangers footy club

Bali Bombings
Woke up and saw the front page of the paper

Hutchence

Didnt really care so cant remember

Diana - I think I was at the Lockleys Hotel

Michael Hutchence - Same again I think

Bali Bombings - I can't remember

9/11 - My then 5 year old son came in to my bedroom about 7am in the morning and said "The TV is broken - the same thing is on all the channels" - In a sleepy state I said "What have you done to it?" ... 2 mins later I was lying there and then it hit me "SHIT same thing on all channels - what's happened" .. so fly out of bed watch for about 5 mins then ring my mum to find out if she knows what's going on. Then start to see all the images :(

Diana's death - Walked into the lounge room where my husband was watching telly and heard on a news flash "Dianna is dead" and I'm like "What??" .... my husband goes "Yeah heard it a few hours ago" ... And then I'm like "What you didn't think to tell me?" .... lol

The Bali Bombings - At home - saw it on foxtel.

Michael Hutchence's death - Can't remember.

9/11

My Sisters Birthday. Was actually moving house on the day. Consequently the TV / Stereo etc were all unplugged and in the shed ready for loading onto the trailer. Didn't hear anything until the first load at around 1030, and even then thought it was a SAFM gotcha call

Wasn't till I got to the house to drop off a load, and my mate who was there told me about it.

Dianna's death

Sitting in a cafe in Cannes (France). Came onto the TV quite late at night, and was in French, but the cafe owner got the gist and was translating for us. We had just returned from the Casinos in Monaco, and consequently driven along the road which Grace Kelly died. We all found it quite eerie. Arrived back into London the day before her funeral, and the Palace etc were shrouded in flowers.

The Bali Bombings

At home. Just absolutely couldn't believe it. I worked at the Airport at the time, and we were quite busy as we flew a lot of supplies up to Denpasar. The worse bit was a few days later when the bodies of the SA victims, were flown back in. Just so sad to see the coffins come off the plane.

Also the Port Arthur Massacre we had the bodies of the Mikac family come in. Only time I ever cried at work seeing those. Just heartbreaking. Totally, totally heartbreaking.

Michael Hutchence's death

Can't remember. Just thought it was a waste. probably at work.

9/11 - My boyfriend rang me up at five in the morning to tell me that a plane had flown into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and to turn on my TV to watch it. I was half asleep so I said 'Wow' and hung up, then went off to school without telling my parents about the news. It was only when I got into my classroom and everyone was talking about it that I realised what had happened.

Diana's death - I was at home on the phone to my best mate. Suddenly I heard her dad shout in the background, 'Diana's dead!' I repeated it to my parents, who were standing around waiting for me to get off the phone - they didn't believe me, but when they turned on the TV it was true enough.

The Bali Bombings - I don't remember.

Michael Hutchence's death - My sister and I had just been picked up from after-school care and we heard it on the car radio on the way home.

I was about three when Roy Orbison died, I think. Mum just sat down and cried for ages when she heard.

I think 9/11 happened at about 10.30pm here and Sandra Sulley cut into the end of Rove when it was on a Tuesday. I watched the 2nd plane hit the tower and watched it for about an hour before going to bed. Then went to school the next day and had yr 8 Art first up. told all my friends, even tho no one really cared..

9/11- Remember going to bed the night before and seeing breaking news (was about 11pm approx) and was knackered and thought it was a movie. Woke up for a school camp the next day and saw the images on telly before trekking off to mt barker and seeing nothing for 2 days. Didnt miss much though as it was on the news for about 3 weeks afterwards anyway....

Diana's Death- Once again home from another school camp to see the news flash on telly.

Bali Bombings- Was at home and saw it on telly.

Michael Hutchence- Dont recall

Apparently school was awesome that day as everybody was watching updates on the news (both staff and students), unfortunately all were back to work the day we got back from camp!

9/11 i was watching Talking Footy with Nick Holland who had dislocated his shoulder. It happened i reckon around 11pm as they were chatting away and i was spewing at the time because i wanted to see what he had to say being an SA boy.

However within 15 minutes of them crossing to the burning building i got to see the 2nd plane fly live into the tower. A very surreal moment and Nick Hollands dislocated shoulder was so irrelevant to what was happening! Stayed up all night watching footage of it etc. A very sad day in history!
