Electrical Problem

Postby LMA » Tue Aug 31, 2010 9:31 pm

Any Sparkies out there? After some renovations I've found the wiring for an outdoor socket (which I have a DIY sensor light attached) is too short for where I want it to go. Just wondering if it is possible to extend the wiring with some kind of extender of sorts, or does the extra wiring have to be tied in with the existing wires?

Im not a sparky, but work for an electrical wholesaler and deal with sparkies everyday. Like to think i know a reasonable amount about things though ;)

LMA, when you say socket, im not 100% sure what you mean by 'socket', either way the wiring can be extended with a junction box i would think. Pretty easily done by a sparky, not a major job at all.

FC, WTF ??? Green ooze ? From where ?

hahahaha for some reason 'green ooze' and 'light globe' reminded me of The Mighty Boosh where Old Gregg goes 'I HAVE A MANGINA!!!'

Batten, couldn't think of the fixing before. So if a Junction box links the existing wiring to new wiring, that's the way to go. Nice one Felch

Ah, probably wouldnt be using or go anywhere near that light fitting if i was you...

The green ooze is caused by some kind of chemical reaction with the copper wiring/terminals corroding. Im guessing its old wiring. Get someone in asap FC. Surely there must be an electrician at the footy club ? Probably not a huge job to fix, at least to get it safe again.

Thats what i thought you meant, a batten. Yeah, a junction box should do the trick no probs. Mitre 10 in the port would sell them mate, or pop into P&R Electrical on Commercial Rd and grab one - around $5. Someone who is just a little bit handy could probably do the job - not that i recommend that though... ;)

No, I've lived at the only 2 footy clubs in the world that don't have sparkies

I swear a pre-requisite at my next club will be a sparky

I can't even put light globes in my laundry or my bedroom because of it, the ooze has disintigrated the bit where the light globe goes.

I don't trust sparkys with a barge pole, only because they'll try and charge me thousands to fix it...

I don't have thousands :(

They need to be replaced FC. The battens themselves arent expensive, $8 probably. You just need to find someone to put them up. As long as the wiring is ok in the ceiling, shouldnt be over the top.
