The only way it would happen would be if the Adelaide Cup lost there holiday or they were held on the same week end, can't see it happening

The concept of having a public holiday for a car race is almost as absurd as having a public holiday for a horse race...

I was thinking about that this week.....we had a public holiday for 20,000 people to attend a horse race meeting. I suggested to friends during the week that the holiday would be better on the Clipsal weekend, gives the organisers a Monday holiday to try to remove some hardware that creates road restrictions without full on peak traffic.
Then we hear today that there were 89,000 people at todays race. A lot more than attended last Monday event.

The horse racing industry is much more important to our economy than a once a year car race

The horse race is iconic and been here about 100 years
The car race where will it be in 10 years time ?

Imagine if we had a holiday for the Grand Prix when it started about 1985

Forget the the Adelaide Cup long weekend then, make it for the Melbourne Cup.

20000 is a poor turn out for our states big race and the event just doesn't justify a long weekend IMO.

MAL, the Adelaide Cup is about as iconic as the Perth and Sydney Cups............
SANFL grand finals pull bigger crowds and have been around about the same time, do we need a long weekend for that?.

If it has to be used for a sporting event then I'm sure we could come up with something better for a day off.

Melbourne Cup is national race day for mine and that's where it should be a national long weekend.

I agree with Smithy on this one O:)

I'd much rather a public holiday on Melbourne Cup day.

IMO - I reckon if Melbourne Cup was a public holiday you'd get just as many race goers to an Adelaide based meeting on that day than on Adelaide Cup day itself.

20000 is certainly a poor turn out for our states biggest race meeting and the event just doesn't justify a long weekend IMO either.
Public Holidays cost the economy many millions of dollars, 20 000 people attending our biggest race of the year does not justify a holiday for the whole state.
I don't doubt the racing industry is a large one and important to our economy, but would it significantly suffer by losing a public holiday status for the Adelaide Cup ? People will race/bet even if it is not a public holiday.
If we must have that public holiday, it would be better used celebrating something else. ( not neccessarily the Clipsal 500, but that is an option )

Agreed. The Group 2 Adelaide Cup is about as prestigious as winning a Logie... Make the Melbourne Cup the public holiday...

I repeat though that the idea of a holiday for a horse race is plain funny. Does anyone know whether the Brits get one for the Grand National or the Yanks for the Kentucky Derby?

Got no interest at all in car racing but i assume the MAIN race is on the Sunday so why would their be any reason for a public holiday?
As for all the other Public holidays, well they're mostly a joke as well especially the Adelaide Cup & Queens Birthday ones. :?
Also with Public Holidays, a large % of the workforce have to work anyway to cater for all the people that have the day off so it sort of defeats the purpose.

That never used to be the case until more recently, I can remember when a public holiday was exactly that, only essential services worked, then someone convinced someone that we are unable to survive with the shops shut for a couple of days
