My old jalopy of a Corolla has given up the ghost. I am getting You Pull it to take it away to the great car graveyard but the car still has a couple of months rego remaining, does anyone know how I go about canceling the rego?

yeah go to the rego place, you will get some of your money back....

Word of warning - they will charge you a fee to unregister your car. You should still get some money back from your rego though anyway. I don't know how much the fee is or how much money you'll get back, but I do know you might be able to avoid the whole thing by taking the licence plates off.

Fill out a cancellation form ( the reception staff member who assists customers when you walk in will give it to you if you want to take it home and come back later)
You need to hand in the current rego sticker and the rego plates with the form.
If you want it backdated you need to fill out the back of cancellation form and have it signed by a JP declaring "this car hasn't been driven on any public road since DDMMYY"
Christies & Marion Service SA offices have a JP in the office most days.
Opening hours 9am - 5pm Mon - Fri

The admin fee for the cancellation is $15 which is deducted from the refund.

You can use the refund to help pay for the transfer fee and stamp duty if you've bought a new car, as long as it's done the same day as the refund application.
Your new car has to be transferred into your name within 14 days from purchase if it's registered, else a $69 late transfer fee applies

i got $50 when they took my datsun sunny

I got $50 when I took my old Corolla to the wreckers back in the nineties. I reckon I got the better of the deal

I got $50 when I took my old Corolla to the wreckers back in the nineties. I reckon I got the better of the deal

It's worth trying your luck on ebay, the wreckers offered me $150 for a defected 1989 Commodore i had, but i thought i could do a little better than that so i put it up on ebay and ended up getting $782

I reckon you can transfer the rego onto a different car
as long as its in the same class
will cost you a 15 or 20 dollar fee though!

No can do. it is impossible to transfer the rego from one car to another. the rego dept can "hold" the money in your name for as long as you like till you get your new car and put that towards the transfer\stamp duty\rego of a new one, but the actual time cant be transferred.

other than that 85 is right on the money. make sure you take them the plates and sticker though or you wont get anything but wasted time!

Well just cut up the plates and burn the label and there is no false declaration then is there. Either that, or just say they are lost. What's wrong with a little porky declaration anyway? No biggy.

I know, hence the wink. how would they find out anyway. unless the plates turned up somewhere doing the wrong thing. no one would be the wiser.

Rules have changed and you can only "hold" the money for future use for 7 days. If not used within the week you get a refund cheque thru the mail automatically now.
