A Swiss millionaire has been handed down a record speeding fine of $290,000 (£180,000) by a court.
The man was reportedly caught driving a red Ferrari Testarossa at 137km/h (85mph) through a village.
The penalty was calculated based on the unnamed motorist's wealth - assessed by the court as $22.7m (£14.1m) - and because he was a repeat offender.
It is more than double Switzerland's previous record speeding fine - handed to a Porsche driver in Zurich in 2008.
In the latest case, the motorist was clocked speeding 57km/h (35mph) faster than the limit, according to the cantonal court in St Gallen, eastern Switzerland.
"The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed," the court said in its judgement.
Swiss media reported that the man owns a villa with five luxury cars, including the Ferrari.

good on them i reckon you should be fined a sum that will hurt your actual pocket not have the same fine for everyone as the fine has different meaning depending on wealth or lack of wealth, say something like 15% of the pay packet/what the business makes per week etc etc & btw serves the idiot right

I was in a car that the driver was pulled over for speeding in Finland many years ago. Seems the norm in Scandinavian countries to fine you based on your income ( agood system that I agree with BTW ). When asked his occupation, the driver of our vehicle told the police he was unemployed !!! I never did find out how he went with that.

How about this for being hard done by. I picked it up on a medical web site.
The car owner in WA was not speeding, his mechanic was hooning about in his car without consent, yet the car is impounded for 28 days..
I assume the WA Police want to hoon about in it.
I am not the Doctor in question (wish I was

)
The law is a joke.
In English criminal law, intention is one of the types of mens rea (Latin for "guilty mind") that, when accompanied by an actus reus (Latin for "guilty act"), constitutes a crime.
The Lamborghini's owner is being punished despite having done nothing wrong. I think that is extraordinary (actually stupid to the extent of being effin ridiculous, but extraordinary will do)

I agree with you, Psyber
I also agree with Kahuna - surely the Elizabeth stereotyping has been done to death,

I had this discussion with one of my close mates who is very pro-Labor and unions (he also drives a Porsche)
He argued that the wealthier you are, the higher the fine should be.
IIRC (because we were at lunch and it was about 4pm), I asked: if you want to introduce that sort of doctrine, why should it be restricted to motor fines? Let's give higher jail sentences for assault, murder etc based upon your wealth
Is it a crime because of your action or your wealth?

I know - I told Mom and she's going to ring him and fix it
She says you are still avoiding her as well - noticed a Volvo following you everywhere?

It's an idiotic law and punishing a lot of innocent people. Have a friend here who loaned her car to another mate who then let her boyfriend drive it (unlicenced), so guess what happened when he was pulled over by the cops? Car impounded and to make matters worse they did the dirty on her and said "bad luck" and went and bought another car for themselves, leaving the owner with the bill.

The moral from this saga is twofold - never lend your car to anyone, and be damn careful whom you use as your mechanic...

I hope you split the bill by percentage of incomes!
