Whilst browsing SAFooty I sometimes look down the bottom to the list of Registered Users to see who is on-line. I have two questions:
What is a "[Bot]"? Sometimes it is an Exabot [Bot], sometimes a Google [Bot] and I reckon I've seen a Yahoo [Bot] as well.
Why do some people "hide" their presence on-line?

I think they are robots that trawl the net to build the search indices

People hide their presence for several reasons:
a) They're at work - work collegues may be on as well but they don't want them to know they are on
b) They are here to have a quick look and don't want to be bothered by anyone else (ie PM's)
c) They want to 'sneak' around and have a look at the site without people knowing what they're looking at.
etc, etc, etc

Are you trying to say that people spend a lot of time on this site while they are supposed to be working?

Users would not dare be on-line during work, surely?

Thanks Mr Beefy and A Mum.
In terms of hiding ones on-line status isn't it easier just to browse whilst not logging on, then you show up as an anonymous "guest"?

In short - No.
Because you don't have all 'options' open/available to you as a guest.
Whereas if you are logged in 'hidden' then you can browse the site with full access.
IE - when you are not logged in you are unable to tell which posts you have or haven't read and things like that.
And you can't post when you feel the 'urge'

So in short being logged in hidden means you're not really here, but you are if you want to be

LOL
Figures would be interesting to know,
But I would say that 80% to 90% of people accessing this site do it from/during work time !

If there is any doubt that your employer may not take kindly to you using the internet for forums such as safooty .net, I suggest you tread very carefully.
From personal experience i will make a suggestion for those who may have people who don't necessarily agree with you on any subjects that you cease posting during working hours as similar to what happened to me may well occur to you
.
A "very nice person" decided to make a list of all of my posts on this site that were made during working hours, he then wrote an accompanying letter to my GM asking if he could apply for my position as I seemed to have not much work to do and attached the list of posts and used a name of a poster on this site and sent it to my employer. Nice person, don't you think!
Suffice to say, I was questioned about it and my position was made redundant.
It was also noted that this person would find any place of future employment and do the same thing again.
For that person's advice, I do know who you are and I have advised my new employer of my use of this site and they have no problem with it.
Some people will stop at nothing to cause others problems, be warned, there are some out there who will do anything to make things awkward.

Websearch came up with: Bot = A robot; A piece of software designed to complete a minor but repetitive task automatically and on command
And....
I have very limited knowlede on this - but from what I've been told/read-
Bots like Google, Giga, Yahoo, etc just comb websites for their own info, they search content so they can use if for their search engines.

Aceman that sucks !
Some people are despicable -
Although - if you look at it from an employers point of view

Luckily I work from home too Moe - only thing being if I spend too much time on here during the day I have to work all night to make up for it

Yeah pal, go back on the 11th January, just in time to start making all the SAAFL footy stuff for 2010 for all the clubs that struggle to get themselves organised, then want it delivered "next week".
Is Plympton one of those clubs?

There are some "low life" people on this planet who will do just about anything for one moment of glory. I have no issues with the employer point of view, more so the way the imposter did it and the Karma bus will eventually call on him.
