Nothing like a little mathematical analysis to destroy the wonder of these things

Any two digit number written as XY has the value 10xX+Y

Subtract the two digits, value = 10X+Y-X-Y = 9X

This value will always be a multiple of 9.

On the final grid, the numbers which are multiples of 9 (9, 18, 27, 36, etc) are assigned the same object. So no matter what your original number, you will pick only one object.
