No Foxtel ones because I have an unlisted home number, but I had a short run of midnight calls soon after I moved here.
No one spoke when I said "Hello", but there were pub or party noises in the background.
So, I pulled the connection when I go to bed for a couple of weeks and that seems to have stopped it.
It made me wonder who had the number in the past...

I got one from Telstra yesterday. You answer it and as soon as you speak its an automated message saying "Hello, blah blah Telstra, blah blah" (at which point i hung up). I think it was something to do with the surveys that Telstra are trying to conduct. It was on the news last night.

You mean this?
https://www.mytelstraexperience.com.au/ ... fault.aspxSurely they aren't trying to improve their poor customer service with annoying, recorded telemarketing style phone calls??

Thats it. I heard "Telstra" and as I was already in the process of hanging up i faintly heard "survey"...
They want customers to take a survey every fortnight to tell them how to improve their customer service.
Last Thursday I had to ring them to dispute a bill of $25.37 for my PREPAID account (impossible to get a bill)...This is how my phone call went..
(first person) Indian guy who said something i couldnt make out so i just explained why i called...he transfered me...
(second person) Indian girl...had to tell her my details so she could do an ID check...then explained the whole reason i called again...was then transfered...
(third person) Australian guy...sounded really laid back and was probably one of the best people ive had to deal with about this sort of thing....had to do another ID check...explain the whole thing again...then he said its ridiculous i got a bill and said he needed to transfer me to the department that will cancel the bill.
(fourth person) some bitch from melbourne...talked down to me...made me do another ID check...had to explain the whole thing again...she said id probably have to pay the bill...i said theres no way im paying it....she put me on hold to check my account...turns out when the indian dude set up my account in August he set up a POSTPAID and PREPAID account in my name....i then had to convince the girl that i didnt ever want the postpaid account and want it canceled and im not paying it...after about 5 minutes of arguing she finally canceled the postpaid account....FINALLY FINISHED...or is it....
The next day i got a call from Mumbai asking me why i called yesterday....hung up on that dude....
Maybe Telstra just got the 3rd guy to take every call they'd be set....dicks

SCAM
About a company doing a test to see if your phone connection or fault or whatever is OK
They ask for you to do a check, using numbers or whatever
The check is completed , and the call is terminated some time after
The hoaxer than makes International calls using your connection, and you are billed for it
Becoz of this scam, and others Ive heard, I take no chances
If anyone phones me from a company on product purchases etc I ask them to put it in writing
Ive done this several times
Coincidently Ive never recieved any correpondence
Just goes to show how much they wanted me to go thru a decision process

My favourite with Telstra was when they rang me up one day wanting to talk to me about my bill. Then they wanted to do an ID check. I said - you've rung me, how do I know you are from Tesltra? Can you confirm you are who you say you are from Telstra? Stalemate. Checkmate. Told them to write to me if she was really from Telstra. End of call. Worked a treat.

Telstra ! Ahh was on hold for about 10 minutes, and then hear a "recording", "Sorry our system is down can you please call back in blah blah blah hours"
I've gone off at the "recording" calling Telstra the big C word etc etc, only to hear the "recording" come back and tell me I was rude !
Oops wasn't a recording after all

Did you reply with, "Oh I'm so sorry, I never expected to get an actual real person on a connection with Telstra..."

I only have a mobile no home phone, that puts a stop to most telemarketing calls. I still get the very occasional one on my mobile, but only once every 6 months or so.
No need for a home phone line these days, mobile & wireless internet do the job nicely.

Mal this sounds very much like when we were with Primus .The wife would pay the bill at the post office .Then the following Friday night between 7-8pm .I would get a phone call saying when are you going to pay your bill .I'd explain the wife has paid it etc etc.Of course the wife was always out when they called and I had no idea where the receipt was !
Now the wife and I would joke about it after the bill was paid.I kept saying lets change phone companies she kept saying no.
Anyway after the third month in a row .I lost my cool .The creep on the phone got to me saying I was a bad bill payer etc etc.And I lost it I demanded to talk to his supervisor .After a pause a woman came on the line and I went off saying how dare you call at 8pm on a Friday. And she went on saying they could by law etc etc.She wanted the receipt and I explained again the wife had paid it at the post office .Not good enough for her.So I put it back on her gave her my email addy (which may have been wrong) and said then you can email a copy of my account and then send a copy snail mail.
When the wife got home I said that was it .Of course no email or snail mail came .So we switched everything to our current carrier end of problem.Of course when they said we will do a credit check I held my breathe but no worries.
So was that a scam ? Was it Primus ?
Now as a side note the wife pays or did pay bills at a certain post office branch in our area.Did they in fact pass the money on.My last rego she paid for me at this branch a month after paying it arrived .
Telstra they still call us .The wife hangs up .but I listen the last call they wanted a bill paid we owed. When I pointed out we have not been a customer for over 15 yrs .He started on about line rental and broadband seemed he wanted us to go back

no way !!

I dont think that the rego is that unusual, they sometimes just take that long to go through when paid at the post office, any post office. it is just the process that is used that causes delays.
unfortunately i dont think the post office and the various places they deal with are connected in real time, the systems have to wait for a scheduled link up to transfer the info from the post office to whoever the bill is for.

What a bloody foreboding thread for me to read!
Me and the missus have been contemplating our future; stay on in Japan, or return to Oz?
But I would hate to live in a country who's citizens have to tolerate such crappy services from something as basic, yet essential as a land line phone company!
Just how common is this?

"Peeves with Tel$tra" is worthy of a thread in itself.

I luv getting them, i never hang up, i just put the phone down on the desk and walk away and come back half hour later and hang up, it stuffs them up down the other end if they ring you and you dont hang up, somehow it keeps their line open even iof they hang up, there phone is basically useless until you hang up

I know a bloke who, when he receives a telemarketing call, grabs the air compressor in his shed and releases into the mouth piece. For some reason they seem to hang up.
