That's no zit, it looks like a "carbuncle" which can be very painful. By the time it's emptied out she could park her bike in the hole, they leave a terrible scar!

It could have been and infected Sebaceous Cyst in view of the cottage cheese like muck, or simply a "boil" or "carbuncle" that has been there for a while.
Basically any break in the skin that gets infected has the potential to extend under the skin and into the deeper tissues if not treated early.
Sometimes a foreign body embedded in, or under, the skin starts the process - I had one on my upper left arm as a teenager after falling into a rose bush.
A piece of rose thorn eventually emerged.

Apart from being unsightly, they can be a source for shedding bacteria into the blood stream and can those cause septicaemia or deposits of infection elsewhere in the body.
Get foreign bodies removed and the infections treated early is the golden rule.

Funny you should mention that, my son is currently in hospital in Alice Springs with cellulitis after getting a bit of steel brush in his hand and leaving it there for a couple of days

Also, he did mention that he now understands the benefits of the private health system
