Adelaide Zoo

I went to the Zoo on Monday and thought it was average at best, with half the zoo closed and three quarters of the other animals tucked away out of view. Just interested for those that have been to other zoos around the world how does the Adelaide Zoo stack up.

What I've learnt is that if you're going to the zoo, ring ahead and find out if the park is fully open etc.

I've been to San Diego zoo, and thought it was ordinary - because of the same things you've stated with Adelaide. Lots of closed enclosures, and lots of empty enclosures.

Toronga - good, but it was years ago and I can't recall much about it.
Canberra Zoo - excellent. We took our 2yo with us and it was just enough for her. Any longer and we would've had to balance her being tired and annoyed, and us missing out on our money's worth.

If only half the zoo is open then you should only pay half the price. At the end of the day people will only go back if they think its worth it, and to be honest apart from a leopard that looked senile, a coupla monkeys climbing around and some interesting meerkats theres nothing to look at. Even my kids were bored.

i personally would much rather go to the Gorge Wildlife Park at least there kids can touch and play with some of the animals, unlike the zoo.

Personally, I reckon what they're doing for these Pandas is waaaaaaaaaaaaay over the top...

They reckon having them is going to bring tens of millions of dollars into the state. Would you deliberately plan a trip to Brisbane or Perth because they had a couple of Pandas??? I sure wouldn't...

Ive probably been to the zoo 20 times in my life and I swear its been half closed every time over a 40 year timespan.
Ive only ever been to the Sydney Zoo and Irwin's Australia Zoo and they both shit on ours, Adelaide Zoo should be demolished, its located in too small an area to do a zoo justice.

Werribee has a top zoo and that is the Local Hotel!!!! Seriously the werribee zoo is excellent.

I agree re Werribee. I've also been to Melbourne zoo on a number of occassions and it is much better and bigger than Adelaide's. They also have twilight shows during the summer with big bands, jazz, etc where you bring your own picnic and esky full of the good stuff.

been there twice in the last month on really nice days and everything was out having a play and wasn't to bad. yeah half was closed but there doing a lot of reno's. 26 to get in i thought steep. get a second job mate too much time on your hands.

Warrawong Sanctuary out past Stirling and Heathfield in the Hills is a good spot for kids, you can actually stay the night there in a tent or dorm room, with a restaurant for you to have lunch/dinner. Guided walks at night and/or dawn, and the rest of the time you're free to wander and find animals at your own pace in a preserved, natural habitat. Took some kids there for a school camp and they loved it, got to feed some kangaroos and wallabies, saw a platypus and some koalas, and had a ball.

Pretty tough to judge at the moment given all the work going on as mentioned before. Seriously though the Zoo isn't purely there for entertainment. A hell of a lot of work goes on in research and education and it is a very important place. Do not underestimate the significane of the Pandas either. If (and it's a massive if) they breed it will be a very significant event.

Singapore day and also night safari shits on every zoo ive been too. If you want to see the crapist zoo go to Phukets, I cant comment on Bagdads.
Melbourne Zoo is really nice for a days outing, so is Dubbo- largest open plain zoo if I recall. I liked Taronga but mainly cause the views of Sydney Harbour were sensational.
Years ago I was a member of the zoo which allows you free access to all zoo's. Well worth it for those interested.

That must have been an old [and somewhat biased] review.
I did a members' tour in the early days before it was formally opened to the public, and even the bus used then, before they were properly set up, wasn't 30 years old.
The current small shuttle buses aren't that old either.

How close you get to animals depends on the time of day, and the weather, to some extent, and how crowded things are depends on when you go.
You can hop on and off the free and frequent shuttle buses at various stations and walk around on paths outside the fences and go up on to viewing platforms.
It is possible to drive yourself from section to section, but they encourage people to use the buses to avoid congestion [and accidents] especially on busy days.

To get inside the fenced areas you do have to book a bus tour, and that is when the opening and closing gates comes into it. [But there aren't 70.]
Giraffes certainly came close and peered in the windows at you when I did that last in 2007!
Australia's public liability laws probably inhibit letting people drive themselves around inside the pens, as they can in some overseas parks, where a signed "At my own risk." waiver might hold up in law.

We went to the zoo in 2007. I noticed a big difference to when I was there in the 70's. It seemed smaller than before although I'm sure that would be down to memory. They did seem to have a lot more going on in the 70's though, the elephant ride, the train ride around the zoo etc.

Chester Zoo in the north of england is a good zoo, I think it's the biggest zoo in the UK or Eurpoe something. London zoo is pretty poor, very old and in need of some investment. there was talk of it being closed down at one time which would be areal shame.
