For mine this is great news (if the outcome is achieved). Telstra's wholesale monopoly has been stiffling competition and technology innovation for years.
TELSTRA has been warned to voluntarily to separate its wholesale and retail arms or be prevented from acquiring new wireless broadband spectrum.
If the company does not agree to structural separation, the Government will use new laws to break up Telstra and force it to sell off its cable network and 50 per cent stake in Foxtel.Full article here ...

Despite being a Telstra shareholder, by accident of inheritance, I agree it is time this was done.

No, but I may look at a "adopting" a younger woman who has a strong desire to please.

Russia is not a bad option - a tall blonde would be nice.
I'd have to word my will so the dividend grew with my satisfaction
and my longevity...
[And retain the charity that otherwise benefits as my Executor.]

I heard Nick Minchin on the radio saying he thought it was really bad idea. Hope they do it!

As a shareholder I am not happy at all.
The Government flog off a huge chunk of shares a week or so ago.
Then they announce this.
IF THAT IS NOT INSIDER TRADING WHAT IS?????

There's absolutely no doubt that this development will impact on the share price, but it is structural reform that has to happen in this country.
It may be argued that the share price is actually artificially inflated because of the monopoloy Telstra enjoys as the owner of the copper network and the way that it protects this monopoly by squeezing out competitors.
There is also no doubt in my mind that Australia has been let down in the area of technological innovation because of the monopoly.
I think this is a very smart and appropriate move by the government and should be applauded if they manage the situation carefully.
Telstra will have no choice but to comply as their livelihood will be severely diminished by future restrictions to the wireless spectrum, and while a cash cow for them now, the copper network alone will not allow Telstra to keep or grow market share if they are also locked out of the National Broadband Network.
Telstra's belligerent days, infamously promoted by Sol, are clearly numbered.
