The Show - do you go every year?

For the first time since we've had kids I'm the Grinch and we're not going this year (eldest turns 12 tomorrow).

We're having a hard time explaining to the kids that not everyone goes every year ... care to give me some ammo to back up my apparently outrageous statement? ;)

I don't have kids, but personally I only go every 4 or 5 years. Nothing much changes in that time, the show is the show. I'm due this year so getting along tomorrow, am very interested to check out the new pavillions.

When I was a kid I certainly didn't go every year, I could probably count the amount of times I went on 1 hand. One way my parents got around it that I can remember was that if they had a family friend that was going, they would let us pick a show bag from the show bag guide and ask the friend to pick it up for us.

I go every year if I am in Adelaide, and most days, but a rarely visit the show bag halls or the side-shows.
I have a free entry pass for myself and an accompanied guest, because I paid for life membership back in the days when I was also a farmer.
My main interest is in the animals, but I also look at things like the plans for the desalination plant and the new RAH, and ask awkward technical questions.
Sometimes you come across someone who actually has answers to them or get told when they will be there to talk to.

Master Boon (13) and Little Miss Boon ( nearly 9 ) go on a bi-annual basis. This year is the "off" year and to be honest they dont really miss it.

Normally a mate of theirs or ours go and get them the showbag/landfill that they want and they are happy enough with that.

What we do in turn on the "off" year is usually get away during the next lot of school holidays and they enjoy that much more, knowing a weekend away is on the cards.

Ask the de-sal people who will be designing their Air Managment and Air Diffusion systems. ;)

OK. I've already quizzed them about the saline dispersal and dilution calculations and been reasonably satisfied with the figures.

Yeah usually, as a teenager I'd go 2 or 3 times every year.
We broke it up a bit for the kids last year by taking them to the Melbourne Show instead of the Adelaide Show. We split up as the son and I like the sideshows where the girls like the rides so it works out well.
Very easy to spend $500 plus though. Mind you that's only 2 big nights out on the piss for me so not bad value in that context!
Speaking of the show is there anyone else that thinks there should be a promoted 'Pram Free Day'? :D

'Pram free day', coupled with "No sideshow spruikers and music day" and I might almost consider going. ;)

That would be bliss!

My daughter is 6 and has only been once, that was because a friend of ours wanted to go but felt as though she needed to take a kid with her.
She came out with this effort last week
"Dad, can we go to the Royal Adelaide Show next week"
"I don't know love, it costs lots of money and I'm not sure that we can afford it at the moment"
"But I have to go"
"Why do you HAVE to go"
"Because the teacher asked us who was going and I put up my hand........I can't lie"

We have two teenage kids that haven't brought it up yet, I'm hoping that they go before the weekend as I know they have money, that way I'll sneak my 6 & 4 year olds there, then I'll be safe for 5 or 6 years. I have heard the showbags and some rides are better value this year.

Tell them you're saving up to take them to Disneyland ... A few years down the track once you've saved it, actually take them to Disneyland.

They'll never be interested in the Show again.

10 trips to the show ( from age 4 -14 ) = much,much less than 1 trip to Disneyland....

I think my kids would rather go to the show every year than Disneyland when they're in their 30s and their Dad is 6 foot under!

I fortunate enough to go to Disneyland before I went to the show.

When I went to the show, it was a big MEH from me.

I like Gingernuts idea of a showbag from a friend.

Booney's trip away is gold too. That would surely be a good carrot to dissuade them from going? I know as a teenager, I'd much rather have had a camping trip or n interstate trip than a day at the show.

!0 Trips to the show @ $200 = $2,000

1 Ticket to Disneyland = approx $80 USD

Yes yes I know the travel and accom makes it vastly more expensive, but for the love of God man think of the children!! ;)

Now Dedj was just looking for suggestions, I didn't say it was perfect ya bunch of snipers!

We do not go every year.
We used to go every second year, however, the past 3 or 4 years we couldn't afford it.
So we did the trick of getting family to grab a couple of show bags for the kids in compensation...lol.

A Mum and A Dad aren't going again this year, but the kids saved up and...
My 16 year old daughter is there today with her friends.
And my 14 year old son has gone with his uncle and cousins.

My eldest son 19 went last year and spent hundreds of $ of his hard earned cash,
Has decided that he'll give it a miss this year.

I don't think that people go to the show every year? :D
Do they??
I think you should add a poll to this question

I just got news from headquarters that our oldest is there atm using his own money and our 2nd oldest doesn't really want to go, he'd prefer to get some news shoes. Looks like master 4 and miss 6 will get their chance.
